Ive got a Pioneer sx-1250 - Yippee...but?

Just got myself a Pioneer Sx-1250 which is in great condition and has been overhauled and sounds great but it has a few extra parts which are not original...

The four large coke size capacitors (22,000uf 80v) have been replaced with 4 medium and 4 small capacitors. So there is four capacitor clusters at where there was just one large capacitors.

I want to change it back to original but need to obtain the two bracket which hold the original capacitors. One bracket holds two capacitors on each side of the power transformer. So there are two brackets in total holding 4 capacitors

I have been looking on ebay but no luck and would like to some other options of obtaining the bracket. Any ideas

This receiver looks gr8 and im loving it

Congratulations. It is a fine receiver. I overhauled mine too and man it's LOUD!!!

Sorry, I have any spare brackets

Unless you want an original look, I would leave it alone. New larger caps are not likely to sound better.

Keepin things original

The ones i have are made of 2 10,000Uf and 2 1000UF capacitors which add up to 22,000UF in a bundle

So there are 16 capacitors bundled in 4 packs each.

It looks ok and done well but not original.

no hum = no foul
if it works fine and craftsmanship is safe id let it be. the only guys that care what under the hood looks like is us audio geeks. personally i wouldnt go making myself work if its working fine and wont blow up.

If you leave it alone, the regulator will run somewhat cooler.

Oh BTW. If you leave it alone, don't drop a dime in the cover slot. :yikes:

No they aren't cheap, but you'll have more room to breathe and dissipate heat. It does get very warm under that hood and larger caps live longer than the smaller ones. It's all up to the owner's whims. Myself, I would have replaced them with the big guys, which I plan on doing in the near future on my 1250. The previous owner was probably just being cheap, but did do a nice job of the install. More work than what I would put into it or even Echowars for that matter.

Always sad to see a hack job. I'd hunt down the proper hold-down clamp (the 1250 has a double clamp that holds both caps on each side of the transformer). Watch eBay, and check Oaktree (http://www.oaktreeent.com/Pioneer_Stereo_Parts_Salvage_Units.htm).

You might be able to fit two standard 63mm clamps on each side of that transformer, but the original clamp had only four mounting screws, not the six required by two separate clamps...so you might have to drill a hole if you go that route.

Newark sells a 22,000µf 100V Nippon Chemi-Con cap for less than $25 each, so I would not say that replacement is 'expensive'.

The actual receiver works great. The guy who previously had it for 8 years was an audio tech and replaced all the caps and did a really good job. I had a long chat to the guy who i bought if from and he did a really good job. So im thinking maybe leave it alone for now, but i do want to buy the original brackets for the future when i need to replace these cluster of caps. I wonder how long they will work being smaller sizes with a high demand on them?

If anyone every comes across and old sx-1250 which is being wrecked please give me a PM and ill buy them.

Do you think the large 22,000UF 100V caps will always be available in the future? Im not sure if i need to stock up?

Ive also sent a message to Oaktree and havent got a response yet regarding the brackets. Do you think if they have the caps would they be worth getting or an i better with new stock.

Do NOT buy old, used caps. That, and Oaktree wants $45 each for an old worn-out cap.

FWIW, the SX-1050 also uses the same capacitor clamp (one instead of two).

Sorry...If I had done that cap replacement, I sure wouldn't brag about it. Suitable replacement caps (ones that would bolt right in) have pretty much always been available, so the work done shows lack of initiative to do the job right.

I know if anything metal did drop in the slots im sure it would blow a mile high ::yikes::yikes::yikes:

Ill buy new capacitors and NOT waste my time with used ones, but i want to get orignial brackets. Not keen to make new holes on the unit to mount non original brackets

Do the sx-1080 and the sx-1280 use the same brackets as the sx-xx50 too?
