JBL 125A or 127H-1 for JBL L80T3 speakers

My newly bought L80T3 speakers need new foam surround for the 2 10" 127H-1 woofers. I look around in my home town and most of the speaker repair places would charge me $80 for the pair which I figure I can buy them used on epay for that much anyway. The question is should I get the 125A Alnico or stick with the original 127H-1 as I've heard that the alnico version sound better. Thanks.

I do not have the T/S parameters for 127H-1 at hand to compare, but I guarantee you they are not the same driver.

You can buy the surrounds and replace them yourself for about $20. Resources and instructions are posted in this forum.... :yes:
 
I thought about that long and hard but decided to leave that job for the pro - dont have that quick steady hand.

What do you think about LE10A in L80T3 Zilch.

Yes, pay the $80. They're worth it. Buying used woofers on ebay could end up being a big headache and cost you more in the long run.:yes: Not to mention changing the sound of your speakers and diminishing their value.
 
The 127H-1 has a bigger magnet, a different dustcap, and a heavier cone than the 125A or 127H. Definitely won't work the same.

In this case, the 127H-1 is the BETTER driver. Better motor, slightly less distortion. Leave it the way it's supposed to be.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Make SURE that whoever does your 127H-1s uses the CORRECT surround. There are surrounds ESPECIALLY made for the 125A, 127H and 127H-1 (despite the other differences, they DO share the same surround). The generic surrounds most places carry are TOO STIFF and will upset the low bass to midbass balance (ie, the speaker will have too little low bass and be boomy in the midbass). The correct aftermarket surrounds (at least the ones that MOST shops will have available to them) will have a slightly REDDISH tint, and will be VERY COMPLIANT (ie, very flexible, or "soft", in industry parlance). If your local shop says they can't get the specific 125A/127H surrounds, then contact me... I have PLENTY of them here, and can send you some of the RIGHT ones...

Putting in a 125A or 127H would be a step backwards for those speakers - even though the older ones are alnico they're a pretty 'lightweight' woofer compared to the 127H-1. The 127H-1 is a better woofer - believe everything GordonW tells you here - he knows. If you're willing to ship woofers, then why not ship them to him for the repair?

Alright, thank you all for comments/recommendation. Speakers are going to GordonW tomorrow morning.
