JBL Decade L36 Driver Replacement?

hey all,


i have been looking all over for information about the Decade L36....i bought a pair off a guy here locally and i got taken...they do not have the original woofers in them....they had some cheap radio shack woofers....can someone tell me what woofers are suppose to go in the L36? and also if there is any other JBL woofer that i could use for the L36? is there a JBL Woofer that is an upgrade over the ones that are suppose to be in there originally? any help would be apprecaited and thanks in advance.

The original woofer should have been a 125A (IIRC).

From the audioheritage website regarding the L36--"...called JBL and the replacement that they recommend is a 125HR."

Apparently that driver is still available from JBL, or you could just watch ebay for a couple of the original 125A's.

127A and 127H can also be used. 127A is the same as 125A except the dust cap is normal orientation. 127H has normal dust cap orientation and ferrite magnet.

The advice previously given in the thread still applies.

The L36 came with the 125A woofer. (10" alnico magnet woofer with inverted dust cap). So if you can find a pair of 125A woofers on eBay or elsewhere, that is your best bet. When I restored a pair of L36 speakers, this is what I did. Bought a pair with no foam and refoamed them myself.

There is also the 127A woofer, which was included in speakers such as the L40. The ONLY difference between the 125A and 127A is that the 125A has an inverted dust cap, while the 127A has it's dust cap in the traditional orientation. So they are fully compatible and interchangeable, as long as the cosmetic difference doesn't bother you.

There is also the 127H (NOT to be confused with the 127H-1), which is the ferrite magnet version of the 127A and can also be used.

As far as what to do? Depends on what your goals are. The L36 is not an amazing example of vintage JBL, more like a budget version of the L100, which is not a great vintage JBL either. IMO, sell them (either before or after restoration) and buy a pair of JBL 580s.

I picked up a pair of L36s shortly after discovering AudioKarma and learning you could easily refoam the surrounds. I think I paid $30. Not long before I discovered AK I threw out a pair of my favorite Altec Model One/Series 2. I had waited for years to try to find replacement woofers and never succeeded. Shortly after dumping them I discovered AK and learned how to do a refoam. Man, was I pissed at myself.

My L36s are in my bedroom system, on the bottom of a two speaker stack with DCM TF400s on the top. It is a wonderful combination and is my favorite system of the three in my home.
