JBL L-60t review

Gotta find that sound
Ok...I scooped up a SUPER minty pair of JBL L-60t floor standers at a bargain price of $55....Can't go wrong there. Floor standing, 2 way with 8" woofer and a rear bass port near the bottom of the cabinet.

......after giving them a pretty serious listening with multiple genre's of music and various placements as well as a 6 inch lift off the floor. I made several observations....some good....some not to good. I'm not an expert in describing or reviewing equipment but I think I have a pretty good set of ears so here goes my attempt at a review :smoke:

Beautiful speaker...the mids and hi's are very clean and detailed without being overpowering. JBL never was accused of having crappy tweeters! The lower bass response very nice...all the way down to its limit...BUT....the mid to upper bass isn't really there. Basslines kind of dissapear until the frequencies get really low and then come on a little strong. I had a piece of electronic music with a sliding bass tone and the speakers hit a freq point on the way down where the sound kind of resonated. The deficiency reduced itself a bit with a boost in power but even playing with the bass treb settings on the amp...and even through my eq ,I never did get the mid/upper bass lines to come through very well. I am going to run them through my other amp and see how much difference it makes.

Anyone know anything about that resonance effect or how to work get some mid/upper bass out of these?

As a comparison, I switched to my freshened up RtR's and the bass while not quite hitting the 30kHz range was much better at carrying the basslines and had great mid/upper bass....something they have always been good at.

the cons:

Nice price on those. Oddly enough I have never had L-60 t's. Ive had the L-20T the L-80T and the L-100T models and they all sound better with deeper bass as you go along of course. The hard thing to do with a 2 way speaker is to have it cover all the frequencys you want it to properly, usally the woofer has to go a little higher and the tweeter reach down a little lower to try and cover the spectrum. Im not real sure unless you change things in the crossover that you are going to get what you want, and even then I think you would be better off with the L-80t or L-100t. the midrange driver on both of them are the same and it does a really amazing job. An incredibile amount of sound comes out of that little mid driver

REGARDS JIM

Played some more last night....connected the JBL's and my RtR's to my recently aquired Onkyo A-8087 and pulled out various styles of music and tried them out. Much better overall sound and more midrange with the Onkyo vs the soft sounding Denon I was using. I also placed the speakers about and additional 2 feet apart and that made a difference as well.....the net was a nice improvement in the mid bass and better upper bass as well. Definately doable now. I thought I was going to have to unload them right away.:scratch2:

On a different note....it was interesting to switch back and forth mid song between the two speakers. the RtR's still have better upper bass and midrange and are a better choice for vocal and acoustic stuff. I have left both speakers connected and will probable switch over depending on music choice.

I havent unpacked the Carver from hiding yet...LOL. (Condo living DOES have some responsibilities)

i have a pair . the only jbls i have left , sold off the L19 , L100 , L100T , and 2600's.

placement is critical for these speakers. get too close to walls or corners , and they
couple with the room like crazy. too much. position them far into the room to isolate
them , and they really chime . i play mine in my 50 x 60 workshop area .they fill the whole space. i couldn't imagine them in a 10x12 bedroom ,though.

a testiment to small woofers in large enclosures producing deep- bass
without being over the top, + tubby. one of my favorites for blues and reggae.
steel pulse , burning spear , howlin' wolf, stevie ray.... a great reproducer of bass-guitar .

I agree with you...I have pulled them a little further away from the wall behind them and it has helped a little more. I have some space constraints in my listening area and I think I'm about as good as I'm going to get...they are keepers! lol

I still find myself listening mostly to the RtR's though....
