JBL L200 Studio Monitors

I am a new member and found this forum while looking for info on JBL L200 Studio Monitors. I purchased mine new about 47 years ago. They have been stored safely in our basement for quite some time. I just had them brought up and placed in my living room. They have a great history but have been silent for about 25 years. I read some members mention L200A and L200B. How do I know which ones I own?

WOW! You're the original owner! How are the foam grills holding up?

I got a pair of these for free a couple years back from the original owner through another AKer, restored the cabs, bought repro foam grills and correct original badges, otherwise completely original.
These are terrific speakers! Please post pics and detailed pics of the serial numbers, woofers etc...

Cheers, Glenn

Oh yeah, get those beauties back into service. Otherwise that's like not driving that Porsche that's in the garage.
What do you have to hook them up to?

Either way, enjoy them as they are or mod to the a L300/4333. I would personally enjoy as they are. Maybe do a re-cap or a re-foam (depending which on you have).

Wow, thanks for the replies. I will get some photo chances this weekend. Through the week we watch our two grandchildren and there is a small table, box of Legos and assorted robot style toys obstructing the view. Glen, I watched your progress on the refurbish job which was awesome. My foam grills lost a one-sided battle with our cat years ago. My speakers have a metal screen mesh covering the front due to my previous use of these for parties and weddings I used to do as a mobile music gig. I was going to remove them but just recently my almost three-year-old grandson demolished a block structure and I heard pinging off the speaker front screens. I prefer to be safer than sorrier. The only specs I recall from the speakers is the woofer has a 19.5-pound magnet structure and is edge wound voice coil. The horn is a 10-pound magnet and a solid silver voice coil.

Your driving analogy is spot on. I did have a 7.1 surround set up going with a pair of Bose 6.2 and four Bose 161 hung on the walls. I also used a Klipsch sub and Klipsch center. With the L200 addition I nixed the 161s made the 6.2s rear surround and have been happy with a 5.1 surround. My support amp is a Sony STR-DA2400ES. It is not brand new but is update enough to have HDMI ports which suits me well. In the long past I bi-amped the L200s with Carvin 800W and 900W amps and Carvin electronic crossover. It was just a fun experiment but too much equipment for the living quarters. I have been married 48 years and too old to start over. It was a real pleading deal to get the JBLs back in play.

So you still want to use them in a home theater configuration? The Sony is probably a decent receiver since it's an ES. I'm not sure it's a good match for the JBL though. A nice mid powered tube integrated might be the best way to go and keep things minimal.

Personally, I would go 2.1. The JBL L200 can produce a wide soundstage and all it really needs is a bit of help on the low end.

I use my modded JBL L200 in a pure stereo setup for movies and music. I don't miss the surround sound but, sometimes some ambience with surround sound is nice.
