Visiting my daughter-in-law's parents house and finally noticed what I thought were vents on closer inspection were JBL's.

Got the ladder and removed the grill to find JBL L86's in pristine condition. Original surrounds. They were installed in 1986 and haven't been used since 1991. I'm pretty sure the cabs are like new.

Negotiations are in process...

How do they sound built in like that?
They're too close to the roof of course, but the baffle being coplanar with the wall should be a good thing.
You haven't seen what's the situation behind the speakers?

Schnitzel,
There was no amp or anything I could test them with. They haven't been used for many years.
I didn't have time to remove them from the enclosure in the wall.
He lives about 4 hours away from my house so I'll have to wait till this summer to swap them out with some fake grills.

I had 2 pair of L46, basically same drivers minus midrange. That there is a score. Can't wait to hear your impressions, and plan on a full recap. Probably gonna need a refoam as well, because sitting since 1991 doesn't deter ol' bald cheater Mr. Time.

onwardjames,
I'll be ready to do that but these surrounds seem to be in good condition. I'll order surrounds for the inevitable refoam.

Make sure you tell them about how dangerous it is to have speakers in a wall. Very dangerous. Might cause a fire. very dangerous. And the recall list on these speakers is a mile long. Better give them up to you to dispose of them properly. After they are so dangerous they are even barred from landfills.

What's funny is I have been to their house a few times before and never gave those "vents" a close look. I just happened to notice the JBL logo by accident.

And he (the owner) didn't know they were there? After the discovery, did he show any interest in getting some gear for himself?

Not at all trying to rain on your parade, indeed this is an awesome find. I just expect (prior experience) that when you finally get 10 clean watts going to these, that the foam will turn to dust.

These adhere to the BACK of the basket, and while I've refoamed at least a dozen various speakers with a very good percentage of them turning out perfect (some saggy baskets, and one very stupid mistake)
I actually sent my L46's off to be done professionally.

Good luck, these are some quality speakers.

He knew they were there but just forgot til i asked him.

onwardjames - I understand what you are saying. He uses wood heat and these are up high so the surrounds will prob disappear when I eventually get them fired up.
