Jsg PROPHILE speakers! Anyone heard of them?

Peter, where are you located? Personally speaking I would have them both reconed. They're old, one is dead and the other is split somewhere. The cone, which is attached to the coil is what does all the work. The frame and magnet just sit there and don't move and unless they're damaged, bent or there's some issue in the space the coil rides in, you won't have to mess with them. When you have them reconed, you get a new cone, coil, coil dust cover and foam surround....essentially, you'll have two new speakers.

If it were me, I'd ask Millersound to send you a couple of pix of woofers they reconed because I have seen some pretty bad reconing jobs before and am unfamiliar with Millersounds work. Whoever you go with, when you get them back, they should look brand new and when you press evenly on the cone with your fingers, the cone should make its entire travel down and up without a sound, no scraping, nothing.

I've attached two pix of my Profile 4 showing the 10 and 12" speakers, both have been reconed without issue. Can you tell?

YtramS, for some reason I was unable to tag you in the post so I quoted an earlier message. Does the potentiometer/l-pad located on the speaker terminal housing on your Prophile 4s do anything to the sound of the tweeters when adjusted? Mine do not. Since I have available time stuck at home, I finally pulled a woofer and found the the lpads in mine are wired up essentially as resistors with nothing connected to the wiper.

Hi all,

Sorry to bump an old thread like this, especially on my first post, but this is one of the only forum threads I can find on the internet related to JSG / Prophile speakers built by Judd Griffen. My father in law bought a number of speakers from Judd in Binghamton back in the 80s and 90s and he's since given a few of them to me. One pair of towers (photos attached) that I was given do not have any model number or badge info on them at all, and I'm trying to figure out if they are a complete one-off set of speakers or if they may be an "officially" recognized speaker model similar to the Prophile line. Does anyone have any idea?

I've tested the speakers at my home but I just don't have a room big enough for them and they're not well-suited for TV/movie use so I'll probably try to find a new home for them if possible at some point.

Hey James, you're pretty lucky to have been given these speakers. I wouldn't sell them if I were you. They don't look like any of the numbered series, and they look similar to the set of bipolar towers that I have, but they're not bipolar. Saw you posted these on Craigslist and I sent you an email. You could always call Judd and ask him about them, he'd be happy to shed some light on them. Are the other JSG speakers you have identifiable as a certain model?

Thanks for the info and the email. I do have other JSG speakers that are numbered as well; a pair of RC-1 and RC-2 rear channel surround speakers from the Prophile line. Those are also labeled specifically as Source Technologies speakers but I've been told they were purchased at JSG Audio.

From my understanding, Source Technologies, or Source Loudspeaker Technologies, are designed by John Sollecito, the same designer that did the JSE speakers (still in operation: http://www.sourcespeaker.com/). Judd at JSG had his cabinets made by JSE and used to sell the SLT speakers in his store. On the other hand, I've seend those RC speakers on usedprice listed under the Prophile name. Do they have Prophile badges on them?

Great info! Yes, they do have the Prophile badges on the grills.

An update on my post above: I was able to connect with Judd today and he confirmed that the tower speakers I posted photos of are actually Prophile 2's with a side-firing woofer option. As such they're floor standing speakers instead of the traditional speaker + stand look that most Prophile 2 speakers have, as seen earlier in this thread.

I am in Austin Texas looking for new Prophile 1.5s or 2. Any hints where I need to be looking would be great.

Prophile speakers aren't currently produced, so if you're looking for new ones, you're out of luck. If you're looking for used 1.5's or 2's, it's going to be tough in your area, as they were mostly sold in the northeast. James Temple does have a pair of custom tower 2's for sale (see previous posts).

Thanks, Sean I currently have 1.5s and for 20 years had a set of 2.5s. Ending up getting a set of Dali's. Very happy with them.

Hi all - I have some JSG Profile speakers that I am trying to ID. I have tried all three numbers published online for JSG Audio and none of them work. Does anyone have any updated contact info?

They look to be a 2.5-way design with the woofers in separate chambers, and each chamber having a small rear-firing port.

Finished in a gloss black high pressure laminate.

Beautiful! Did you try the number earlier in this thread? Someone had successfully contacted Judd in May of last year at that number. What size are the woofers? What are the dimensions of the cabinets? Looks to me like a 2 or 3 with an added woofer. Can you take and post pictures of the backs? And also a closeup of the badges? They look to be inverted from the badges that I've seen.

I tried all three numbers listed online, including the ones in this thread. None of them worked. And there's no web site nor email available.

You could give Source Loudspeaker Technologies a call: (860) 918-3088. Last I talked to Judd, he was working with John there on some new projects.

They are indeed a 2.5 way design. The twin 8" woofers and 1" Vifa dome tweeter are on 1st order networks. May math tells me the tweeter is crossed over around 5500 Hz with single 4uf Solen cap and an 8ohm L-Pad. The coils for the woofers are wound separately and they are wired in parallel, each woofer is 8 ohm. The coils are hand wound and could use tightening or replace with machine wound and shellac'd coils. I am guessing they ring like crazy inside the cab. I would also recommend dropping the tweeter response down to 3kHz with a 2nd order network and crossover over both woofers much lower, 5k is way too high for an 8" poly cone woofer, IMO. The bottom port is "stuffed" with padding possibly to create some aperiodic effect. There are no other markings on the speakers than the front badge.

Dimensions are 38 x 11x 11 inches without spikes or grilles.

Wow this drudges up lots of memories from the past. I have been dealing with Judd since I was 16 years old, lets just say that was many, many decades ago.
I believe over the years I have owned every set he has ever made at one time or another.
With that being said, I have a complete setup I have been kicking around selling.
Profile 3's W/ stands in black
Carver C1-pre amp
Parasound HCA1200II
Carver SD/A-360 compact disk changer w/remote.
All are in near perfect condition since being purchased from JSG.
Might even throw in the 2 coffee mugs he gave me when I bought the setup.

PM me if interested.
Located in Owego N.Y.
