Just bought a Yamaha CR-1020: what should I expect?

that is a distinct possibility ... but, yes, some pretty significant modification would be needed. Using 12AX7s for gain isn't helping matters any, though, I'd opine.

Comparing the phono sections will be interesting too...silicon vs. tube smack-down.

I would put $ on the Yamaha, especially if restored to the same level of detail as the Fisher. ;-)

They put a lot of work into these because the phono input was of huge importance. But the sound test is the proof.

I suppose I should post a proper review once I receive it and spend some time with it!

In case you haven't read the CR-1020 marketing brochure, here is is: http://sportsbil.com/yamaha/cr-1020-b.pdf

Lots of cool info in there, including these RIAA specs:

I didn't notice much difference in sound from the 1000-1020-2020 models, and I've had all three in the same room at the same time.
As far as speakers go, of course there are tons of choices, Polk 7's and BA A150's are good matches, at least IMO.
They may be hard to find in your neck of the woods :D

in those days +/- 0.2 dB was very, very good -- today, it'd be sniffed at by the $3k and up phonostage crowd, I'd opine.

The only bad thing I see there is the choice of "metallic film resistors" -- not what I'd have chosen... but the phono section does sound pretty good, so whadda I know?!

I received the CR-1020 today. In beautiful cosmetic condition... However, no right channel and the switches / pots have static. The xbay seller stated it was in excellent operational condition and had been serviced. Not the case...

Lesson learned for me... No more online buys for me unless it is local equipment and I can see / try it in advance...

Yes, I would have full confidence in buying from fellow AK'ers... Great site and people!

First thing to do is get out the deoxit and clean those switches. Then see if the right channel comes back.

I just relamped my CR-1020, cleaned and waxed the cabinet and put it back together. Fired it up and no left channel. Aaargh. Usually it's something easy so I checked all cables, then all front panel switches. No good. I finally checked the back panel "Coupler" switch and it was a bit out of position. I clicked it to "Off" and then back to "On" just to be sure. Aaah, I had nice stereo again when I powered it back up. Check that switch on yours. I hope it's an easy fix.

... that pre/main coupler switch is a hot-spot for 'issues' -- if you haven't cleaned it yet; do so!

I thought my CR-2020 (which I bought from an esteemed AKer, by the way) had serious issues with a driver or output transistor... long story short, it was just a dirty coupler switch.

A bit of inside information tells me that Beatcomber will update this thread soon after a period of silence...
