that is a distinct possibility ... but, yes, some pretty significant modification would be needed. Using 12AX7s for gain isn't helping matters any, though, I'd opine.
Comparing the phono sections will be interesting too...silicon vs. tube smack-down.
I would put $ on the Yamaha, especially if restored to the same level of detail as the Fisher. ;-)
They put a lot of work into these because the phono input was of huge importance. But the sound test is the proof.
speaking of the Fishers' phono sections...

In case you haven't read the CR-1020 marketing brochure, here is is: http://sportsbil.com/yamaha/cr-1020-b.pdf
Lots of cool info in there, including these RIAA specs:

in those days +/- 0.2 dB was very, very good -- today, it'd be sniffed at by the $3k and up phonostage crowd, I'd opine.
I didn't notice much difference in sound from the 1000-1020-2020 models, and I've had all three in the same room at the same time.
I received the CR-1020 today. In beautiful cosmetic condition... However, no right channel and the switches / pots have static. The xbay seller stated it was in excellent operational condition and had been serviced. Not the case...
Lesson learned for me... No more online buys for me unless it is local equipment and I can see / try it in advance...
