Just picked up a pair of Advent 1 speakers

I just picked up a pair of Advent 1s of CL for $20. They work, but the usual foam replacement is in order. The cabs are kind of rough with some water damage and 1 area with some edge/corner separation. I can't wait to pair them up with my 5002s. Looks like I'll be contacting Rick Cobb again:banana::

Geez, it's raining Advents.

I'll be the first, no images, not truth. Post images. ;)

I just found some Minis that need refoaming also. I have a local guy who can do it for 40 dollars. I paid 10. Are they worth a fifty dollar investment?

I won't be able to get photos for awhile. I'll try tonight. Guy I bought them from had a lot for sale. I almost picked up a pair of KLH 23s but one of the tweeters was out when I listened to them. The Advents sounded sweet, though 1 had a raspy base, likely because the original surround was leaking.

Jonman,

If you have the time, try refoaming them yourself. It's fun in a sick sort of way. The 5002s I did recently were my first and they sound great,

Thanks for the advice. Any tips or leads on a source for the foams?

That's only 5 bucks less than what I paid for mine. Mine have the real wood veneer but are missing the grills. Still trolling eBay for a set but for now I am enjoying them with the new surrounds. I will buy every pair of these I find. The tweeters are warm and the bass is exceptional. I didn't know about these until I got into vintage audio a couple of years ago, but they were worth the wait. Nice little speaker. Here's a YouTube video I did last year to show mine in action.

I wish it would rain advents by me. I hunt on CL everyday for a second set of OLA's so i can stack em. +1 on diy refoaming. Its easy to do and saves some money. Nice score

I spent years looking for a pair of large Advents. I found my 5002s several months back for $15.99 in excellent condition. After that I'm hooked and very happy to find the Advent 1s.

I found mine at the dump.

Yes, do the surrounds yourself. Very easy and fun job. Take your time and don't huff the glue! :D

My first, early set, were from a yard sale (barn find). $5. Rehabilitated them and they sound good. Second set, from estate sale, $40. Rehabilitated too, but not the real wood finish, yet. Sound better than set two, likely due to newer (age wise) caps. I'll likely cap both, but not certain yet. The vinyl set I'll be parting with, don't need multiples of the same make/model speakers.

Here's some photos, the cabs aren't as bad as I thought. Grills are perfect.

Nice. Just a tip, from when I did mine. I read a few posts on guys that installed new surrounds on these. A few guys said to go ahead and mount the new surrounds on "top" of the speaker cone, that it would be easier and wouldn't affect the sound. I tried that first and it just wouldn't set right, so I ended up mounting them "under" the cone, like they way they were originally. It worked a lot easier for me that way.

I see that your speakers have velcro, it looks like, to hold the grills on? I'm having a heck of a time finding grills for mine. If you looked at my video, you'll notice mine have posts built into the speaker cabinets and the grills apparently have holes that slide over them. Funny how they made different setups for the same speakers.
