Just scored ADS-1290s

Who do you think you're kidding? You'll pawn these off on your Uncle Stan the minute you find a similar sweet deal on a pair of 1530's.

Nope... Not gonna happen. :nono:
I have plenty of rooms without speakers. That said, I have been surfing looking for ADS speakers for those other rooms already.

BTW... The same guy is willing to sell the ADC AVF144 center Speaker he has. He wants $80. Anyone ever hear one? Thoughts?

The series 2 used a kapton voice coil former that could hold up to abuse and not prone to heat deformity.

Both used a cast woofer frame. The earlier 1230s used a steel stamped frame.

I think the sound should be nominal between the 1290 and 1290 II.

Excellent find sir. Regarding "Are these speakers still considered good?"...I think you know the answer to that by now. I recently picked up a nice set of M12/90's for cheap that are relatively similar to the L1290's and I love the way they sound.

Regarding the differences between the series I and II, I found the following excerpt in a former post:
"The 1290/2 has a solid state tweeter protection circuit. The midrange driver is a magnetic fluid cooled design with greater power handling capability as a result the two fuses at the binding posts of the original are not present. The binding posts have also been enlarged to accept a heavier gauge wire from 16ga. to 7 ga. I believe the tweeter level switch is present on both models."

Thanks for the info!

By AK rules, your purchase never actually happens until you post pictures.

Especially if they, indeed, rosewood.

I wsa 2nd in line for these. I offered him $300 if he would let me see them first. You got lucky you were dealing with a straight up guy!

The front view suggests the standard walnut veneer finish... rosewood would have been the other, less common finish as seen in this pair of L1590:
