I would guess circa 1956. Was the divot in the bearing present before you used the ceramic ball bearing?

I've heard a ceramic ball can cause wear, but it seems to me that if the oil is doing its job it shouldn't make a difference what the material of the ball is?

Ceramic has a much higher hardness than the platter shaft bearing. Not sure if oil is enough to fully overcome the higher hardness of a ceramic ball.

It is a great place now being close to Berlin, Prague and other cities. I mostly listen to classical music so it is easy to find used german or russian records and polish too. Robert.
The demage is due to ceramic ball. It was pristine after thirty years of usewith metal one.

Thanks - that's been my experience as well. Ceramic balls are too hard for the steel used in the ROK platter shaft bearings. Better to use a standard steel ball bearing.

Alas, this will have to wait until Saturday. I'll probably have the new 3/32" balls by then as well.

Quick follow-up...

The 3/32" bearings arrived... and they're too small.

I brought the OEM Papst bearings to the bike shop and had them properly calipered: 3mm!

Unfortunately the bike shops and hardware stores near me do not have 3mm bearings, so I had to go back to eBay.

Yeah, McMaster sells in 100 or so lots. I've had to do that in the past when I needed a couple of something, just because nobody sold them in smaller packages. I think I have 98 leftovers for Garrard record changers.
