just snagged this at the auction for 57.00 +shipping. After reading about this receiver, and seeing that it's kind of under the radar, I started looking and ended up getting it for a pretty fair price IMO. Can anyone give me some idea of what I can look forward to, so I can feel good about my purchase :D

Nice score !

The STR-V series receivers were very unique in their design. VFets have a sound of their own, and its a very good sound! The tuners in em are quite good as well.

I'd make sure it's functioning okay and maybe have a tech look through it and replace any marginal components. Reason being, VFets are near impossible to replace if they blow.

Enjoy your purchase, it will likely suit your needs nicely. Hey, what speakers are you going to push with it?

I have a pair of infinity column II's, which will need the power, right now Im using a yamaha cr-620 35 w/ch, so this will be a nice step up

Excellent. I predict that the Sony will have a livelier sound than the 620. That Yamaha might be transparent/clean sounding, but like you said, your Infinity's will need the power of a bigger amp.

The Yamaha has a very neutral sound but way underpowered.I know I use one as my daily driver and have tried with numerous speakers and have concluded that you need very efficient speakers for this unit.Just my 2cents.

As I understand it, you are entirely correct in your statements about V-FETS. However, this receiver would be a very poor candidate to select to confirm your comments since it does not use them.

I saw an STR-V7 at my closest Goodwill on New Years eve morning but a fella walked in about 5 seconds before me and made a bee line for it. He examined as I hovered but decided it was going home with him. I was bummed. Great looking receiver. I went to a Goodwill a bit further from that evening right before they closed. Picked up a Sansui 7070. Would have loved both but you can't have them all. Or at least I try to tell myself!:):D

The receiver came today, wow it is a lot bigger than I thought. Looks awesome. But a little problem, the unit powers up, I hear the relay click but I can get no sound out of it. I've tried all the different inputs, hooked up a turntable, but still nothing. Am I missing something obvious? There are no pre out/in jumpers on it. Can someone point me in the right direction to troubleshoot this thing, I have a DMM...Thanks in advance

Pretty sure that the v5/v7 had No mute.

Please don't be insulted but you have the speaker selector set to the appropriate output?

Seems if you select A+B but don't have A and B connected that there may be no sound but it's been so long since I owned a Sony-STRV series.

Relay clicking is goood.

can't remember the str-v's being fused at the outputs?

Take your Multimeter and head to this thread to attempt to check offset!!

After reading this you should have a good idea where to take the 'pulse' of your amp. (Ok maybe Not ALL this I haven't visited that thread in years and it's grown to 150 pages)

Luck,

If the troubleshooting gets to that point, I have the original official Sony Service manuals for the STR-V5. They cover US, Canadian, AEP, UK, and E Models (basically every market).

One is stamped Preliminary and has a B&W cover and 30 pages. The other has the typical turquoise cover/lettering of Sony service manuals, and is 42 pages.

I figured I'd get one of them one day, so why not have the manuals in hand "just in case"? Got a deal on a STR-6800, so the V5 audio plan was shelved. You got a great entry price. Big toroid transformer in that (valid) 85W brute and underappreciated build quality.

PM me if you're interested as your troubleshooting progresses.

I have a STR-V5 as well, it says its only rated for 8ohms on that back which i thought was weird because its built like a tank, also cleaning the controls is a major pain on this one.

I've tried all the possible combinations with speaker selection and have ruled that out, would anyone know the first thing that should be tested, given my situation?

Check the speaker switch, tape monitor switches and plug a cable into the Pre Out/Power amp In. If that doesn't do it, tap the relays- the receiver may have sat for a long time and the contacts may be corroded.

I just realized when I turn the volume up over half, I can faintly hear the song playing along with a buzzing noise
