K-406M Klipsch horn

Hi, just wondered if it’s possible to buy a pair of K-406M horns to install on an older Klipschorn or LaScala speaker? They definitely look interesting.

I’d assume that when they become available, you’ll have to provide a serial number to demonstrate that you own either AK-6 or AL-5 that are eligible for upgrades. If you have older AKs, you could get horns from fasttrac Dave or @mboxler ’s EBX-400’s if he makes them available.

^^ This gets my vote

Now, the 'sneaky' part of me says

"What if I want to buy some K400's for some project.... well....I need a serial number. It wouldn't necessarily be impossible to get a serial number from someone who's selling them, or they're showing them off (and the serial number might be visible on tag OR they might simply give you the number).... and viola, you've got one.

So it might be doable but with so few of them in public hands, I'd say it might be a tough hill to climb. That said, my wife calls me a dumbazz from time to time, so I have no clue.

As soon as I hit send, I got to wondering.... is the new horn the same dimension of the old K400? (to fit the front of the speaker) Is it a swap out replacement? I have no idea.

Why not just get a K510 (or 402) and take it 2-way?

I spoke to someone who had seen the new stuff and I got taunted a bit being asked "so what do you think Roy did???"

I was 100% sure that he put a 510 in there and did just that. I was of course, 100% wrong. I've never heard the updated version but still wonder why he kept it as 3-way (I'm guessing to keep with PWK's legacy??)

(shrugs shoulders)

If you’re going to the trouble of cutting the motorboard for a K-510, the PRV WG4550 is a better horn, although I’ve not tried it in a 2-way configuration.

Don't have to cut the motorboard. Just build a box and set it on top. Now it's totally reversable. (I realize this is a Belle but you get the idea)

The K406 mounts from the back. It's hard to tell but it appears to have the same screw pattern as the K400/K401.

I believe Klipsch also rounded out the motorboard in front to extend the mouth flare.

As you can see the K406 is MUCH shorter that the K401. This will improve the time delay between the mid and tweeter. I too am curious why Roy went with a three way vs a coaxial mid. I plan on buying a pair of B&C DCX462 coaxial drivers to mount on my modified PRV horn. Will be interesting.

Did you get the B&c yet? Purchasing the 462 is why yall haven’t heard from me in about half a year. It’s very good. I need to build a new HF box (including ports) and retune. But right now I’m using my old driver corrections with new crossover frequencies and just reran Dirac and have just been enjoying it too much to be motivated to change anything.
