Kenwood KR-80

Dear all of you!

I am sitting here in the foggy morning of southern Germany close to Munich. Since several years am collecting a few vintage gear of Pioneer and Sansui. And since a few days I have a Kenwood KR-80 receiver that might not fit to the other environment. It is a nice slimline receiver built in 1980 in a close to mint shape. Nevertheless, something is not working as I would expect: The memory of the station setting holds the frequency for less than 30 minutes after switching of the receiver.

Help - for understanding the process how to memorize the settings and how to repair this!

Many thanks in advance - although the KR-80 is not a real vintage receiver as you might expect in this forum!

Kind regards
Andreas

Hi
I ,m from Macedonia, South Europa.Could You look for some small battery inside the unit? I think that the memory could keep its setting that way.

It's either a battery or a capacitor that would hold the charge...either way, should be a fairly straightforward fix once you find a Service Manual

Good luck!

Hi,

and thanks for the good hint. I guess I have found it  - a small coin cell BR2325 which might be responsible for the problem. Thus, I try to find a dealer who will have something like this on stock. I will keep you updated!

Kind regards

Hi Sasha,

do you think that a 100% identical battery should be used for the exchange? The capacity of an alternative model may be a bit higher (250 mAh instead of 165 mAh). I guess that the voltage of 3V may be the most important parameter.

sorry to butt in , that will be fine to use just keep the voltage the same higher mah will take longer to charge and longer to discharge , that's of course if its rechargeable ..if not rechargeable it will just last longer

KR-80 problem solved!

Hi,

the problem with the memory is solved by using a new battery (CR2032, standard in any PC) attached in a battery holder. The old battery was soldered at a location which required opening of top and bottom plate of the receiver. Now I fixed a coin battery holder on the board. A new battery can be changed just after opening the top without any further soldering. I have no idea how often this may be in the future...

Thanks for the good advice!

Andreas
