KLH 17's

I recently bought and restored a set of late 60's KLH 17's. After a thorough cleaning, resoldering all the connections, checking cap and resistor values and retreating the woofer surounds I have an almost NOS quality pair. Fun little speakers! While they sound good with my solid state gear they really sing with tubes. I have too many speakers as it is and a friend wants them to go with a H.H. Scott tube amp...What is the going rate for them? I only have $15.00 and 3 hours or so into them.

Hey Zin, I have a pair of 17's in similar "State/Condition" courtesy of fellow AK'er and Buddy Mark Andersen,,,,, This doesn't really answer your question price wise..but to me these are a pair of speakers I just won't part-with..I have many larger etc. etc..but these 17's do so-much "right" that I just delight in listening to them..A "trick" in using these with an SS amp....wire a 1/2 ohm reisitor in circuit on either the pos or neg terminal..it reduces the damping factor of an SS amp..and (depending on the amp) makes the bass fuller and sweeter,,as they were intended to sound with tubes.. To me these are one of the "Must-Haves" of the Vintage New England Vintage Line.. Your friend will really enjoy these!!!!
 
I totaly agreethat they sound great with tubes. They sound great with my HK TA-230 and I bet they will sing with his 7591 equipped Scott but what is the going rate on these? I could sell them to him for what I paid but he and I trade gear all the time and we while we give each other great deals we don't give stuff away either.
 
There is a pair of KLH 17's on ebay, starting bid 40 bucks, shipping standard 45 bucks, no bids as yet, auction has 2 more days to run, probably not as good as yours.

It is, if they are in good shape and work properly. No question. I'd prefer a set of KLH 33s, but the 17 would definitely be my next choice (then the 38)...

in my experience the 17's in good condition go for $40-$50. even though i dont own a pair, they are one of my favorite bookshelf speakers and i would have a hard time parting with them.

Archie, the 1/2 ohm resistor tweak will definitly work with any "tube-era" speaker, not just the 17's. :thmbsp: Depending upon your amp-reciever, your results may vary a bit, but is definitly worth looking into :yes: Dave :music:
