Hello,
I am looking for 8 ohm speakers with solid base and big woofer size (min 10") under range of 200$.
I will hook them as front speakers with Onkyo NR636 receiver.

I heared good reviews about KLH 9912. They are cheap, having good solid bass and they are best in there price range. Does any one experienced KLH 9912 ? would appreciate if one can comment

If you do a Google search, you will find a few threads on these. Consesus seems to be: party speakers that get loud without much in the way of finesse. You can probably do better on a budget of $200.

Here's a short thread on these:

Best Buy used to sell them and they often went on sale for really LOW prices, well under 150 or so a pair, I believe.

These are OK party speakers but not much more, they pale in comparison to the true KLH speakers of the '70s or so. By the time the 3-4 digit series of KLHs appeared the company had been resold any number of times.

I have a set of older AV4000 12" three ways with the motorola electric-piezo tweeter. Very efficient, OK for Home theater which is what I used them for years ago!

Don't pay more than $40 for these used (maybe less)! As said above, you can do much better. check out some of the new ELAC towers by Andrew Jones, perhaps?

Thank for reply guys.
Is there any difference between party speakers and home stereo-theater speakers ?
I reviewed ELAC towers they looks good but they are rated at 6ohm, where for my receiver, its suggested by Onkyo to use 8ohm speakers.
Any other suggestions for vintage style speakers.

Party speakers is usually shorthand for LOUD, Bassy, not very detailed up top and maybe a little muddy, but OK for dance music if CRANKED! In other words not the best for two channel stereo listening.

For Home Theater L/R channels, a party speaker could be viable if you don't have a SUB. I think for that Onkyo the 9912s should be pretty loud and maybe even dynamic enough for HT surround. If you don't mind having less than stellar stereo music presentation, the KLHs at a CHEAP price might be OK! My AV4000s above did a fine job for HT on a Kenwood 5.1 AVR.

Also, a lot of higher end Onkyos have a 6-8 ohm default speaker setting, as well as a 4 ohm option. Pretty sure the 7XX and above do. Not sure about the 6XX? But. I do believe that your Onkyo would NOT have a problem with 6 ohm Elacs.

In fact, ONKYO's homepage lists the 636 for 6-16 ohm speaker impedances so you're GOOD!

Yes, You are right, Onkyo is from 6 to 16 ohm and it should be ok with ELAC but as i said its suggested by onkyo to use 8ohm for better result.
I have Pioneer GR-777 Stereo Graphic Equalizer in queue to buy. I think this will help in getting better sound result from KLH 9912. What you think ?

Also one center speaker will be added as well.

A lot of AK members are rabidly opposed to equalizers? I am not against the use of one when necessary, they can help in less than optimal configurations. Of course they will not be the best choice, but I do think it might help here.
