KLH Model 5

Thrift-a-holic

Hooked for life
Hi guys, I know this speaker has been discussed a couple of times, and have read the threads. Seems, some are pegging them as classical/Jazz speakers. I have an opprotunity to buy a set, but would use primarily for rock/Classic Rock/Pop. I am not going to be dissapointed am I (gotta love subjectivity)? I have "New" Large advents that sound pleasing to me. I would be purchasing them from somebody who knows that they have value, but is not a "Hi-Fi" person, and speakers have likely never been re-capped or woofer re-sealed. I may have to make him an offer, and am not sure where to start. I feel if a speaker has not been serviced, and has not garentee (like from a shop), then that needs to be built into the price. Would it be insulting to offer less than 100 dollars?

Let me amend this by saying, I already have Advent Twety-Two A's which I got for 6.50 from a thrift store that sound decent. I would think these would be much nicer though. Maybe 100 would be a decent opening offer. Less than would probably be lowballing too much.

i would give them a try, they are one of the few vintage KLH speakers i havent had or auditioned but based on klh track record of that era i would certainly give them a try

the 5's are a great speaker .. .

they were billed as tonally the same as the 6, but with higher power handling due to the larger motor structure on the woofer, and addition of the dual 4 inch midrange drivers . . . .

they are super close in sound to the 6's (and 23's) and definitely can rock the house :guitar:

IMO, $100 is more than fair for a pair . . . I've been able to score all of mine for well under $100 . . .

I bought TWO pairs of KLH 17 speakers.....for well under $100.
$100.....is more than a fair price.

Awsome, when you say more than fair, you mean, I am giving him a generous offer, or 100 dollars is a great deal. I know you said you paid less than 100, but I assume that goes into the catagory of, lucky find, like how I found my New Large Advents for 30 bucks at a thrift, but know they are worth way more.

I'd say you're being generous giving him $100 for the 5's. I have a pair of the 12's which also have the same mids as yours. My recapped 12's have some of the nicest mids of any of my speakers. If I had room for a pair of the 5's I'd give $100 for the pair as they are worth it imho.

Is there anything wrong with your Advent speakers?
They are good at playing what you will be playing on the KLH, so why bother getting new speakers?

Point well taken Sir. Byrd. My reasoning being I want to obtain a nice example of each of the companies that Henry Kloss influenced. Like I said I have a Twenty-Two a and they are nice for 6.50, but they do leave some to be desired of. I am starting to think maybe I should just be happy with my Advents. This stuff is addicting you know.

BTW, Markusk, your Avatar photo is killing me! For a moment I thought you may be that person, and I got all school boy like on the inside:banana:!

$50-$70 would be my top dollar. KLH's are EZ to find cheap. Great speakers for what they are. I had a stack (4) of KLH 23's once powered by a G-8000 and WOW, that would ROCK your face off if that's what you were into.

I've paid 5 bux for Acoustic Research speakers, $3 for KLH's but my rationale is that while I spent very little for some speakers I can splurge on others.

Well it looks like I am going to have to letm' go. Dude just emailed me back and "claims" he was offered 120, and wants me to go higher. Funny, he has had them posted since 12/3 without a sale, and now there is suddenly demand to drive my offer up. I am a bit puzzled though by one thing I have quoted from this thread below.

Maybe I am not looking in the right place, but if I could find them for 50 dollars I would be all over that. I have not seen "good condition/working" vintage speakers for that cost on feebay ever, let alone shipping costs. I mean sure if I hit the thrift stores everyday like I do it may take me two years to find a good set of TOTL KLH's. There are two vintage music stores in MN I have been to and I can say with assurance a pair of 5's would be marked no lower than 200 dollars. I feel reasonably lucky to live near a large city like Minneapolis, which affords me more opprotunity than many, but maybe if I lived in a bigger city like chicago, opprotunities for great finds would be amplified. I just know I try really really hard to find deals via thrift, auction, and craigslist and it is tough. I tried estate sales a couple of times, but it is not for me. People get nuts at those things man.

you're smart to pass . . . it's friggin craigslist, not ebay. I hat ewhen people do that . . .

BUT . . . you will find a pair. . . granted, I live in MA, the home of KLH, Advent, AR, etc, so they practically fall out of the sky. do they have ham/radio fests around you ? I scored one pair of 5's for $10  the key is ALWAYS pay for early admission so you can get a jump on everyone else - not 5 minutes after sealing the deal, someone else was offering him more money . . luckily, he had integrity :thmbsp:

It's funny though .. . I've seen mint pairs go for $200 on ebay, but I've also seen some go unsold for $50 :scratch2:
