KLH Model 6

I am going to look at some KLH Model 6 speakers soon. The current owner says they have been re foamed and re capped. The grills don't have the original covers but he does have them.

I was just wondering what I should look for and what is a reasonable price.

Thanks.

IMO, the first "red flag" is that owner says they have been re-foamed. KLH Six have cloth surrounds. Proceed with caution.

I hope they are not actually refoamed as they should have doped cloth woofer surrounds. I would do an image search for KLH Sixes and familiarize yourself with what they should look like and if something looks off be prepared to walk away. I guess I could see if someone didn't know any better or if the cloth was damaged replacing with foam but that would hurt value I would think.

Thanks for the quick reply guys. I misspoke when I said refoamed. He said the surrounds were redone.

Now that I've re read the ad several times I see that he said he has the original cloth surrounds so they have been replaced. Too bad.

I've looked at so many ads for speakers lately my head is spinning.

I'll probably be passing on these.
Thanks again.

I have sold them for up to $175, but would never pay that. I buy them for around $60 a pair and recap them myself, though I will just wait till the right deal comes along,

Where are you located? Has everything to do with the prices offered.

Don't give up on them yet. The seller might be having difficulty explaining what's going on. Ask for specifics ie has he replaced the woofers? If so, with what? He might be simply saying that redoped the surrounds, which could be fine, depending on what he used. I would press him a bit, then see if he's open to coming down on his price if you want to move forward.

The Six's are a marvelous speaker when right.

sberger, I'm located in Minnesota.

The original cloth woofer surrounds were replaced. He does have the originals. Would it be worth it to put the originals back on if possible? I'm not sure what shape they are in.I

Thanks.

I would ask him for more details. Did he just replace the surrounds, or the entire woofer(more likely). What did he replace them with? Originals? Good. Modern day substitute? Maybe good, maybe not. You would have to listen, but obviously they won't be the originals. Why did he replace? He may not have known that cloth surrounds can be repaired by redoping, ie adding a special kind of tacky fluid to the surrounds to close up any leaks. If that is why, and he still has the originals, then you would be able to put them back in.

So I would try to nail him down on what he's done. Also how do you have pictures? How do the cabs looks, and what are the serial numbers?

Any idea what a value might be? I know without hearing them it's hard to tell. But let's assume they sound good and the original surrounds can be put back and redone correctly.

Thanks

I'd probably go up to $125 myself here in the SF/Bay Area, but I would think out where you are things are less expensive, so probably no more then $100.

For price reference, there's a pair on Pittsburgh CL that have been re-capped, cloth surrounds treated, and 2 extra tweeters for $200. Physical condition is about a 6/10.

So I couldn't wait until Saturday. I had to go see them. The cabinets are in very nice shape for their age. The grills have been replaced. They are ok. Could be better. Not a big deal.

The woofer surrounds are original! They look good too. At what point do you re do them?

The tweeters are also in good shape.

I'm happy with them.

Currently hooked up to my Pioneer SX-535 playing Deep Purple Machine head on one of the PL-630 TT.

NICE!

Congrats. Sixes are a legendary vintage two-way speaker. If they have fresh caps and been redoped, you should be good for years to come. Regarding the grills. the originals were very bland IMO. On my most recent pair, I painted the baffle black and use them without the grills.

Do a "push test" on the woofers.

Gently push in on the cone, being careful not to scrape the voice coil. Let go. Does the cone snap back right away, or gently return over a second or two? If the latter, then nothing needs to be done with the surround. If the former, then the surrounds may need more dope, or else there is a leak either behind the basket or somewhere in the cabinet that needs to be tracked down and sealed up.

I did push on both cones. They return in about 1-2 seconds. I think I'll leave them alone for now.

Thanks.
