Klipsch KG 4.2 Value?

There's a set near me that appear to be in very good condition in oiled oak for $180. Are they worth that much?

I've never heard them, but I do have a set of Heresy II's and like them. Seller states I can give them a listen before buying.

What's the consensus?

Thanks in advance.

I have the 4.2 oak and I really like them. With the Crites titanium diaphram upgrades they are even better. Before the upgrades I did notice a harshness to it. Not terrible, just noticeable. That price sounds good. I paid $200 for mine and have no regrets. And mine have a couple holes in one grill.

Thanks guys. I bought them yesterday evening. I like the way they sound.

The grilles and most of the cabinets are perfect, but the tops look as though someone had plants on them or something to that effect. There is some water damage to the veneer.

I'll have to give them a good sanding and see if a fresh oiling will help the cabinets. I don't know enough to reveneer them.

I'll check out the Crites upgrades. Thanks for the tip. :thmbsp:

Klipsch KG series are great speakers. They are not within Heritage speakers, that's why they could be found for less, otherwise they would be twice expensive.

BTW, I paid $500 for mine...but that was brand new in 1991. :D Our one local hi fi store had just received their first two pairs, and I bought one of them. :thmbsp: Getting them for <$200 in today's dollars is a pretty good deal.

I did have one of the rubber surrounds crack in one spot, which I glued up with RTV cement because the surround is not replaceable on these. You might think about rotating your woofer and passive 180 degrees to keep them sounding good for years to come.

I just got a pair in excellent condition at Goodwill for $49.00 for the pair. They are heavy, but I'm looking forward to connecting them to my Heathkit AR-1500.
I check out the local Goodwill stores, sometimes you can get a value there. Sometimes people drop off things they don't realize the value of.

No experience with the 4.2, but own a pair of 3.2s and while not the Heresy they are fantastic speakers. Definitely worth what you paid and then some in my opinion.

I bought and sold a pair recently, they had nice bass, but when pushed the bass didnt keep up with the treble. The treble became ear piercing but the bass just sorta stayed where it was.

How did that RTV cement work out for you?

Still going strong.

Folks, the caps in that crossover are now 25 yrs old, so a recap is in order which will help smooth out the midrange and treble. Also I cannot emphasize enough how well the Crites diaphragms smooth out the harshness in the midrange (guitars especially) and bring a sparkle to the treble that even the recap does not achieve. Best $60 I ever spent on speakers.

I was walking my dog and found a pair of 4.2's in someone's garbage. It was really weird since I had just got a new (used) amp and was wondering what configuration of gear to use.
I turned a corner, saw some speakers at the end of a driveway and, voila, a clean pair of Klipsch begging to go home with me. They had no damage, electronic or otherwise.
After a re-cap, I set them up in my garage and couldn't be happier.
