I had a LA-224. Great potted output transformers as well. Were not marked Olson. Tango?

deoxit did not work. I pulled it apart to see if I could fix the pot.The wiper was worn so bad on one channel it made no contact. Unable to be repaired. The channel was almost as bad except for a few spots. This potentiometer is a dead unit.

I went ahead and salvaged as much as possible. The unit is going to be come a stand alone amp. This integrated is dead................

Bummer too.

I have a coffee can full of volume controls from my erstwhile favorite local emporium; I could take some resistance measurements and see if I have one that's close enough(?)

oh, and this integrated is now a box of parts. I have already salvaged what I could. So, thanks, but no need now.
 
You know, you probably did the right thing... I still always feel bad when I 'recycle' a component.

I should do the same with the Sansui 1000A that's here -- the only worthwhile thing about those is really the output iron (which is by all indications quite good, and Tamura-made).
 
I see a cl post for a lafayette 240a. Looks to be in good shape but completely untested. The seller is reluctant to even power it on without a variac. He wants 100 bucks, but I can't see spending anything on it without knowing it's current operating status.

I recently bought a realistic stereo 40a that I'm very happy with. Running Matsushita EL 84 output tubes. I'm guessing the lafayette might have a very similar sound and build quality.

Gadget is correct. So is the seller.

The electrolytic capacitors are dessicated and won't properly function. Turning on old gear blows it up. If the filter cap is shorted the rectifier will fail and the power transformer may burn out a winding.

Check the output and power transformers. If those are good, you're all set. You can check the tubes on a tester if you want. That's a bonus. Everything else (capacitors and resistors) is going to be replaced, anyway. Think of buying this for the iron and the chassis.
 
Understood. Since I already have what I believe to be a similar amp...realistic stereo 40a in good working order, I wont pursue the Lafayette.

I've been impressed with Realistic. First with playing cds using the aux output...sounds real nice. Lately played some lps on my Pioneer pl 518 tt. Sounds very nice also.

Playing around now with various speakers to determine which sound best.

That's really cool. Unfortunately my skills are not such as to attempt what you've done.

I'm afraid I'll have to enjoy the little Realistic without that nice mod.

BTW - that Trio - Kenwood is quite good looking. I've never seen one on this side of the pond.
 
I've got one of these too. Got it for free. Only rebuilt it enough to make it safe to use once in a while. It looks cheesy to me but sounds quite good after a half hour warm-up. Original Japanese tubes except one that failed. Matsushita I believe.

Which do you have...the Realistic Stereo 40A?
 
Ahh...OK.

I saw the Realistic Stereo 40A in a Radio Shack catalog and it mentions its tasteful styling. I supposed it was tasteful in 1961...lol.
 
i'd argue its far more tasteful than silver colored plastic like a lot of modern electronics are. Then again I like Edsels and the white enamal faceplate on my Sherwood gear too. Not everyone agrees with that either.
 
I have one of these, the one where the transformers are not potted, I guess maybe the later version.

Do anyone know what's the procedure to adjust the hum on the two potentiometers on the back?

Just that? Is it going to affect how each power tube is biased, or instead it affect the preamp stage?
 
No effect on bias etc - just balances hum from the heater winding. May not have any effect except on phono...
