Levinson HQD

i think your right about the deccas, if your confident about making your own horn then go for it!

the only manufacturers making massive woofers these days that i know of is ofcourse Fostex ( http://www.fostexinternational.com/docs/speaker_components/pdf/fw800n.pdf ). using the 10" rather than the 22" hartley woofer seems to miss the point. HQD isnt about compromise, seems silly to ruin it by compromising on the bass

I like those Fostex. I wish I could find a plan or dimensions for those horns.

i could ofcourse help out with dimensions of the horn.... bit busy at the mo, would be 2nd week of january before i could measure them up properly

If you wanted a suitable 'period correct' sub, I'd suggest buying/building/cloning a pair of Sumo Samson subs. That sub used the magnificent JBL 2235H 15" driver... which, IMHO just beat the pants off any of the Hartleys, anyway. Others may disagree, but that's my say on it. Use either the Sumo Delilah crossover, or the JBL BX63A (you'd want the 'A' version, since it has adjustable crossover point, whereas the older BX63 had a fixed crossover point).

The Samson was the ONLY sub on the Stereophile Recommended Components list in that era, IIRC...

Regards,
Gordon.

Hi Gordon. I'm not worried about it having a crossover inside. The DB systems is an active crossover and I want to say it is at 100Hz but I am not sure. I can always use one of my many power amps lying around to give it juice. I will definitely agree about the 2235Hs being really badass. I've heard them in 4333s and they got after it. I will check out the SUMO subs. I am going to power both pairs of ESL-57s with 2 Dynaco Stereo 70s. For the Decca ribbons, I will use my Audio Electronics Supply AE-25. I guess to keep with the David Hafler motif I will use the DH-500 for the sub/subs if I don't use my RBH. The RBH is actually more impressive than most realize. It has it's own power amplifier/crossover component that is rack mountable- very well built and heavy- very nice anodized brushed metal face plate with a purple led like Krell gear. Looks to be in the same league to me.

Your 1/5 of the way there. Keep being patient- it is well worth the effort. I can also draw up plans off of these stands if anyone would like them.

Hello,
GREAT SYSTEM ! Congrats. Also I am planning to build the Mark Levinson HQD. I already have the 57's Quad (bought them many years ago already stacked by a previous owner), the Decca Ribbon and the Hartley 24". Actually what I am missing is the stands (frame) plans to build the system. Did you agree to share the information with me? Thanks :thmbsp:

Kinda related to this thread.

It looks like no more Maelstrom woofers. It looks like DIYcable.com is backing out of the business.

Kevin happens to be one of my best friends and yes, he's downsizing due to the economy and also taking a large financial hit from an asian supplier that used an unauthorized adhesive on a large (prepaid) order of woofers. The thermal characteristics of the adhesive were substandard and Kevin refused to sell them. The long story is that the buildhouse has refused to make good on the order and Kevin has had to scale back on his business. He continues to sell the products listed on his website, including the "Anarchy" mid-woofer which came from a separate OEM buildhouse.

@TerryO

Thanks for the info. Unscrupulous business practices in China??!:yikes:

I guess we know what happened to the powdered milk ingredient that ended up poisoning those kids. It sounds like the real milk part of it went for making adhesive.

I don't think that the Chinese have a monopoly on unscrupulous business practices, but the harshest criticisms I've heard has come from several Chinese friends.

Did you ever produce any plans for the Levinson HQD, I have most my parts to build a system and the frame plans sure would help. I hope your enjoying yours.

Let me know if you can share, and thankx for shareing the pics on the web.

Thank you
