List the top 3 best sounding speakers you have ever owned.

I would easily say that my "improved" Altec 19's were my best last production speakers I ever owned, followed by AR9's and finally Time Frame 700's. Superceeding those in the non-production types are the ones in my avatar.

Now that I am a somewhat accomplished speaker builder of 38 years, lessons have taught me what I really enjoy listening & consiquently building to. Many of those lessons were learned from the masters like Altec, EV, JBL, Zilch and others. I am humbled to have learned from such great companies & persons.

1) JBL XPL-200A
2) JBL L300
3) JBL XPL-90A

Really, really hard to choose between the L300's and the XPL's, but I can listen to the XPL's all day long, where the L300's were so dynamic that they could wear you out. Maybe it was an artifact of the time delay difference of the 12" horn and the tweeter? The L300's had a better live concert sound, the XPL's are more natural, while still being dynamic and lively. Perhaps with an upgraded crossover the L300's would have the edge.

ADS L710
Vandersteen 1B
Soliloquy SAT5 with Velodyne CT-80 sub

Just picked up a pair of excellent-condition ADS L620 with original stands, so my new list is:

ADS L710
ADS L620
Vandersteen 1B

With honorable mention of certain Soliloquys, Advents, and an overbuilt custom sub/sat system my brother designed in the early 90s. But I really like the solid bass and inviting transparency that make the ADS speakers sound so good. I just want to keep putting on album after album...

For me it's very easy, panels are my thing Acoustat's all the way, for boxed speakers it's Dynaudio Consequence ( YEP the older model )

The only ones I own (or owned) worth mentioning...Tyler Linbrook Signature System. I finally got them working properly after fixing a wonky xo, some blown drivers, and doing a partial recap with Claritycaps. Nothing else I have is even close to these.

Easy, all James B. Lansing

1. L250ti

2. L300

3. L150a

Honorable mention to the SVA2100, 4430 and S3100. Some of the best two ways ever IMHO.

Snell Type A/III

Acoustic Research AR9
