I'm helping a friend set up a system. She has B&W 685s and a Marantz SR5008 to drive them. The system supports both the TV and enjoying tunes but playing music is the more important of the two. B&W 685s are bookshelf ported speakers. She leans towards funk and R&B - say like MJ Blige or Earth Wind & Fire, etc - and vocalists like Barbara Streisand and Nina Simone. She wants to keep things low key visually so a small box is good...probably 15" square or less.
I've paid a lot more attention to large vintage horn speakers than I have modern satellite/subwoofer systems and was hoping that I could get some schoolin'. Is it important to match a ported sub with ported bookshelves or may sealed work as well with the 685s? The only basic design that I know that I'm looking to avoid is a downfiring subwoofer since she lives in an apartment over other folks and I figure that could get to be a problem for neighbors quick.
Would a dayton diy subwoofer kit be a good idea? or should I look at the shallower (cheaper) end of the pool with SVS or Hsu? or....???? I'm looking at about $500 or less but that's ballpark. If it would make a noticeable difference, I'm quite capable of reasonable quality woodwork but am not necessarily looking for a project but rather to help my friend get an enjoyable audio experience.
