Looking for this Marantz CD player. Anyone recognize it and have any info? PIC.

Called the LHH-1000 here in the US, there was one at the flagship 6th ave electronics in Springfield NJ, where I worked for a semester during college.
The CD-94 had a matching external DAC for sale too.
I have a Marantz CD-72U here, the first bitstream machine. It's quite good, but doesn't see much use these days.
That's a nice looking unit. When I saw the 94, my eyes bugged out. It's a virtual perfect visual match to the Pl-10!

My mom is all the time bringing me old cdp's. They're so cheap anymore. I have a Toshiba X-37 or some odd number, and that thing sounds great, even tamed the legendary bad mix that is my favorite KISS album, "Hotter Than Hell". Sounds wonderful on that old gal.

I too have better, but sometimes, it is just fun to piddle around. That old Sony I have, 302, I believe is the number, sounds pretty lousy, but the transport and the speed it tracks up is amazing. Love to have someone mod it. Big beautiful lit up buttons, just a hoot.

Yeah, tons of cheaply priced units out there. I picked up a NAD C 521 BEE for 20 bux from my local S.A. Powered up fine at the store, got it home, and just get error messages. I fiddled with it some, got it to play a track or two, but then nothing. It's going to the trash. The good ones like the Marantz I'm liking are not cheap! Figures, I got good taste!

Don't toss it just yet. Clean off ALL the grease, relube with lithium grease, double-check the laser.

Dr*audio has a great thread about fixing cdp's, and I've only had 1 or 2 out of DOZENS that I couldn't fix.

Good luck!

the 302 was a decent player for sure, it may have been an early dual DAC setup. There's a fellow who replaced 44 caps on one, and said it made a noticeable difference.

Ds, If I had the skill, I'd do it, but alas, I don't.

Certainly fine for low-level listening. Watching it is also a treat with that clear window. Love that thing. Oh, and it was DOA when I got it. Grease, and a little cleaning and TLC, and it came to life.

When I pulled the cover, clearly the first time since it was built, it was spotless! The tray opens & closes perfectly.
The CD spins up, then slows down and stops. It's not reading the disk data. I adjusted the laser output pot as noted on the web when I was researching this player, and that seemed to do the trick. It did, for like two tracks. Then back to the error message.
I'll give it another try, but I'm not putting any money into this thing. The error message is a commonly known problem with this player.
Thanks for the encouragement James!

Darn, well.....you tried. When it gets to laser adjustment, that's hairy. And, most tantalizing, it DID play 2 tracks. Argh.

It did, and it sounded very good too! Disappointing for sure. Overall it's in very good condition. I figured I'd use it when I go to gatherings when demoing my gear. Anyway, I have the Technics player, and a TEAC I've had for years that work fine. I want that Marantz though. I'll be patient.

Thanks for that drool worthy read John! Wonder what the current market value for grown children is these days!

Not sure, they have gone for some huge numbers in the past. It was listed when new in Australia at $5999, but with only 500 built, I'm unsure how many came here. I know at least one did, because I have the CD12/DA12LE, along with this 27.5kg beast:

http://www.thevintageknob.org/marantz-PM-95.html

It was one of those once in a lifetime scroes...right place right time... (both tabletop aluminium remotes, the amplifier remote was still sealed in its foam box)

I've got tons of pics of the interiors of the cd/dac/amp if you are interested- there's nothing like it in terms of build quality- the only CD player I own that is the equal is the Sony X7esd.

Post them!

So I worked out a deal for Ds2000's Marantz CD72U. Tim and AKer DaveLarz came to my place today for a caffeine, sugar filled listening session, and I have the CD72U hooked up. WOW! I hadn't a clue how much better a CD could sound! Not at all clinical it harsh sounding, much more analog and rich sounding, terrific bass too! The player is beautiful looking and immaculate as well. I'll post a few pics shortly.
As much as I love the CD94 aesthetically, I just couldn't justify paying close to a grand for one.
Thanks Tim for making the deal happen, much appreciated!

Positively beastly, GD. Love it.
Yes, it's manly! Sound is phenomenal, still can't get over how much better this sounds than the Technics player. Loads, reads and plays very quickly.
Tim took great care of it, almost spotless! The U variant seems uncommon as well, though we don't know what differentiates the U version from the others.

Not sure if it is the case with this player, but a "U" in the model numbers sometimes indicates universal voltage. Is there a voltage selection switch somewhere on the rear panel?

I'll have to check that. Thanks!

Checked, no universal voltage selector.

Anyone have the CD-72 Owners manual that could possibly scan it? I have the Service Manual from Hifi Engine.
Thanks in advance!

The Dutch site ooba-tooba posted is very useful; the 1541 chipset is legendary. The list is not complete however: some more recent CDP/DACs using the 1541 aren't listed.
