Love the old stuff need some advice

Hello...New to the site and getting back into the audio thing after a long time. No I wasn't in prison...Worked in a "stereo" store in the mid 70's while I was in college in Terre Haute, IN. I had a Technics receiver, I can't remember the model, EPI 110 speakers and a Dual 502 table. Not high end, but what I could afford as a student. I saw on Craig's list a set of Infinity Reference Three speakers for $50 and bought them. I thought about using them in a home theater. Talked to the wife and told her I'd like to have a system again. Looked on Ebay, pawn shops, etc. and found a Pioneer SX-1000TD at a good price. Here's the deal, I've got a lot of my fathers 33 and 45 RPM records from the 30's, 40's and 50's. I need a mono table for them and want a stereo table for what's left of my stuff. Any suggestions? Also, in the future maybe a speaker up grade, any suggestions there. I love older stuff. My daily driver car is 28 year old Porsche, and my wife is past 50. Did I say that in my outside voice about my wife? Any way...Any suggestions would be great. I haven't scraped the surface of this site and I'm very impressed. Thanks to those who may post, and hope to post with you again. Fritz

I love the old stuff too, and I'm not even old!
Never seen the pioneer SX-1000TD before, but it looks like an interesting piece.

It was made to sell in Europe as I understand. Works with several power sources, 220, 110 etc. Has a highly rated tuner. 120-130 WPC I believe with a two speaker set up, 50 WPC with a quad. I didn't know you could get a dual cartridge set up for a two channel table. Lot's of things I don't know. Thanks, Fritz

Hello, and welcome! I'm pretty new around here as well. I found a Pioneer SX-1000TD in an antique mall last year. I didn't know anything about that particular model, but it was a Pioneer, so I thought I'd try it. The price seemed reasonable. I got it home and hooked up; found the volume control scratchy. I'm not a technician, so I took it to a local place and had it cleaned up and the lamps replaced. It looked and sounded really good, but I still preferred my Technics SU-7700, so I sold the Pioneer on ebay. Even with the service cost, I made a little money and the buyer said he was very happy. One thing: I don't think your Pioneer is a "quad" it just has hook-ups for two sets of speakers. Those 120 and 130 watt ratings are IHF. The RMS is the 50 watt rating. See this thread:

If that receiver is like my Technics (it might not be, I'm no expert on these things) you want to be careful about OHMs of the speakers you hook up to it when using four speakers. If the OHMs are too low you can burn up your receiver.

Congrat's on the (sweet) SX-1000TD. And the vintage Porsche & the young lady. Some things they just got right.

I got back into 'vintage' six months ago.

So no expert but; with haunting the local online classifieds, and AK searches, I found turntable deals were still fairly common. A little patience + AK + pouncing = happy clam. Six minutes after it was first posted -- I scored a mid-fi Sony PS-LX430 nib for $20. That let me hang on until a mint Dual 1219, a very decent Dual 1214 (@ super prices) came along. Couple of new stylus, and 's all good. Versatility, and cool, for a couple of hundred was (almost too) reasonably easy. Got a mint set of SS Dynaco pre amp/amp thrown in too. Enjoy your quest.

Try and stop at two, or three, tts.

I dare ya. :boink:

Well you are off to a good start it seems.
For your dads records, Im thinking you will need 78 capability. So..the most common (easy to find) would be Dual and Elac idler drive turntables.
Duals are very nice, but unless its just been refurbished, odds are it will have to be done, either by you or someone else ($$). Upside is, plenty of parts and support to be had. I would suggest 1019, 1219/1229.
Elacs are also very nice. Overall a more dependable tt I think, not as needy as a Dual might be. Downside is less parts availability and support overall. Most recent of those are the 50H and HII though earlier models are nice too. You may find some that are badged Realistic (45 and 46).
I have both brands. And if in decent shape and cared for you will be happy with either (think classic Porsche).
For any of those, I should think maybe a Shure M44-7 cart would be good, you can slip a stylus on for 78 and then change out for the conical, and an elliptical can also be sourced. They track like a demon and sound very good, nice and full.
For the 2nd tt...a zillion good choices to be had, this depends on your local market and whats available, because you would want to avoid having a tt shipped if you possibly can. Unless certain conditions are met, they just wont survive. Alot can pack them, but a whole lot more can't.
Youd be best off to come back with a list of whats available to you locally and get opinions on that list. That way you can weed out to the price point that pleases you.
