Luxman R-1040

Absolutely a quality receiver... generally in the top ranks for the period, along with the brands you mentioned and others.

I don't follow Luxman enough to tell you whether $150 is a fair price, but someone else probably can. I've looked at a couple of R-1050's but they sold for more than I wanted to spend at the time.

It is a good receiver and a fair price. If you are interested I would offer less and see where it goes since those receivers are prone to having issues.

IMHO it's too much money but then looking on ebay people seem to be asking more then that so what do I know?
I bought an R-1120 for not much more then that locally so maybe I got an awesome deal and my reality is askew.
Probably as good as the comparable Marantz/Sansui/Pioneer products but it doesn't have the following that those do so it'll be tougher to sell when the time comes.

Thanks, y'all

The feedback is great. Luxmaster--can you tell me what some of the common issues are on this unit? Sounds like the sound mightbe right up my alley, but trying to avoid taking on a project piece.

I've never heard one, but I love the way they look and everyone seems to have good things to say about the sound quality. The only completed auctions that I found had one going close to $100 and the other $150 so I'd say you're right in the ball park.

On those units It seems that the tuner section fails often. The rubber band that wraps around the dial in the tuner section breaks and it is prone to lights burning out. Other then that the amp section is strong and never seen one break down to the point where it would not put out sound. For some reason the current ebay listings are a bit high from what I have seen in the past. I would pay anywhere from $90-125 but thats me. That unit is considered midgrade for that line in the 70's

Hi
I paid somewhat 90-100$ (75€) for my R1050. But it wasn't serviced before. On the other hand it had no real issues except cleaning switches and pots.
Very nice gear, makes me happy daily in my office.

My how times have changed. These are worth well more than that now. Only the R-1120 is a unit with issues, seems folks think they can overdrive them forever and this causes problems.

The smaller units do not have any common issues other than needing a lamp replacement, using 4 lamps (12V 100mA) with insulated wire leads, two push into holders on the ends of the dial glass and one (on the 1040, two on the dual meter units) push into holders behind the meters.

The R-1040 is one sweet 40wpc unit. One of the best sounding from that era of great receivers.
