Luxman R-117 & NAD 7600 Nudies

Finally, I have a Luxman R-117 to go with my RR-117 remote. Vintagestereo has been telling how good his three R-117's are so here it is. I have the R-117 open for a cleaning so I decided to open up my 7600. Check out the build quality.

My 7600 is now on its way. However, based on the photos, the R-117 appears to be better built. What's your assessment? Luxman's advertising made a BIG deal about the "triple-shielded transformer", which does stand out in contrast to the NADs. Also, Luxman used a circuit board design referred to as the "Star Circuit", which has been discussed elsewhere here on AK, along with their famous Duo-Beta negative feedback.

But, the "proof is in the pudding". So, I'm REALLY eager to hear what you think of the SOUND of the R-117 after you've put her through the paces.

OK, I'M REALLY EXCITED FOR YOU!!!!! The R-117 is one of the GREATEST RECEIVERS OF ALL TIME!!!!

(OK....I'll calm down now.....)

I've had it on the bench (kitchen table) with test speakers so no impressions yet. Tomorrow I'll install in my main rig with a D-109 CDP for some critical listening. The black Lux look is miles ahead of the NAD.

I agree the build quality of the Lux is better. The Lux layout is more compact and the caps are bigger with higher voltage ratings. Check out the heat sinks, the Lux is more substantial than the leaf style NAD's. However, these are detail differences, the NAD is still a quality piece.

Sam -- How did you end up with an R-117?

Initially, my R-117 started off with the same symptoms as Patrick's R-115 so I thought OH NO. Sound only in one channel even in CD Straight mode. I cleaned all the controls I could get to from the top and the channel cleared up. I'm chasing a little static in the volume control so I think I'll need to do another cleaning. Otherwise, sound is strong and clear.

Sam -- I figured that there had to be something seriously wrong with it for the Seller to want only $75.00, but, it sounds like you lucked out.

So, what do you think of the sound?

You are going to love the 7600, vintagestereo.    Relatives of mine have the 1700-2600 combo. It sounds amazing!!:music: :D

I lucked out big time on this one. I bought without hearing but the price was so good, I just wanted to pay and run.

My R-117 sounds terrific and is becoming a favorite. The sound is modern and airy with a nice punchy base. I'm playing Dire Straits on my D-109 though my HPM-100's. The bass is amazingly clean and deep. I just had to reposition the CDP because it was skipping because of the bass. (With tone controls defeated!) Very nice balance of mids and highs as well. Stays composed at higher volumes, which I like. Powerful and smooth, perfect for easy listening or party bombing.

Now I know why this is your daily listener.

Sam -- Another unit we agree on! Your description of the Bass is exactly how I would describe it. It also has a nice soundstage and excellent imaging. Frankly, there are few seperates that sound much better than a properly operating R-117. A working R-117 is simply an ABSOLUTE PLEASURE to listen to for HOURS on end without an fatigue. I just wish that Luxman had taken it to the "next level" and resolved the reliability issues. Instead, they went HT and then withdrew from the US Market.

Frankly, there's only ONE Receiver I like the sound of better.

I re-sprayed all the controls and the static in the volume pot is gone. It now works perfectly. Ah, karma. Finally a CL deal for me.

What is that ONE receiver? I like variety. I don't know I can stay faithful to one but the Lux makes for a compelling listen. And, the remote is very handy.

Hi praise, especially with the selection you have. With all that dynamic headroom and no Dual Core caps, I like the Lux as a daily driver.

What, did you flip/flop? Fine sounding as the 2285B is, it has unobtanium parts. I'll get a 16.5 one of these days.

It's such a close call...but, after I thought about it, the 16.5 is the one I really LOVE to listen to, although I hardly use it because of "the neighbor". :nono:

My greatest regret is that I can't "open up" any of my Vintage Receivers because of that aforesaid neighbor.

What do you mean by "aforesaid neighbor"?:scratch2:

I live in a large duplex. My neighbor is my landlady. Despite having the wall behind the two stereos in the LR covered with large bookcases full of books, she can be disturbed by the bass (the mids and treble would be absorbed by the books and the wall, which is about 4 or 5 feet behind the speakers).
The stereos are both 250 wpc amps, the one stereo featuring 15" 3-way JBL at 98dB/w/m sensitivity, and the other a vintage pair of Phase Linear that are probably around 92dB/w/m.
Now that I've finally got broadband the phone is open for getting her calls when it is too loud. Yikes. When I got home from work today her car was gone. Getting some flickering of the power meters on the big Yamaha.
Before I moved (4+ years ago, sheesh--I'm still not unpacked) the big Concept 16.5 was my casual, daily driver. It would get played more often than the big separates--a receiver is just so easy, and when it sounds as fine as the 16.5, well there you go.
Well, what a fine thing. I just meant to commiserate with you about not really being able to exercise a powerful stereo whenever you want to, and got off on a tangent.
