Luxman "Suckface" Rides Again!

Well, we'll see about that. The RX-103 was the Top of the Line Luxman Receiver back in 1981 and had really bizarre styling. It listed new for $1,000.00, but put out only 90 watts, making it relatively underpowered for the money. Anything, this E-Bay Seller had one that was in "excellent" condition with a BIN of $75.00.....so I just had to pull the trigger.

By 1981 most brands had dropped back from the enormous power output the last of the watt war models.
I don't remember Luxman (& Kyocera, for example) having participated in the watt war, anyway. Quality and sound were their ouvre. 90 wpc is most likey a very conservative rating.
Let us know after you get her and have a good listening session or two.

Chris,

If you don't want to keep it in the end, I'm buying!
Please do let me know when the time comes (if the time comes that is)

Yes, bizzar style, but reading the testreport it´s a very good receiver. I´ve never seen it here in Germany. Interesting unit as contrast to Silver-Pioneers or Marantz.

Something to be said for these old Luxmans. I have a RX-102 (the smaller brother) with a matching KX-101 tape deck sitting next to me, running my home theatre setup right now. Although about to be retired due to my need to get something that will do video switching, etc (my ht system has just grown WAY to complex!), these two units have provided great, good sounding, reliable service. And I gotta say, I still find it to be incredibly cool watching the faces move in and out when turned on and off.... :D

When I was a kid there was a store that sold Carver and Luxman. I used to sit there pushing the power on and off just to watch that thing go in and out. I'm amazed they still work! I think it looks super cool!

Looks like the designers couldn't let go of the vintage silver. Right side of the face looks vintage the other side looks like 80's styling gone bad. It all depends how it performs and sounds.

Unfortunately, my Suckface doesn't suck. I have to push the faceplate back with my finger, but, then when I let go, it slowly slides back into place so no functionality is lost. All I need is a new motor. The rest of it works very nicely, especially the Computer Assisted Tuning (C.A.T.). Muy slick!

I've got her all cleaned up now...so here she is:

That luxman puts out sweet sound, i've heard that unit before and the 90 watts rms per channel is truley underated, but I do have to say it is such a homely oeice though, the bird

I happen to love the look of it. I've always wanted one. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I guess.

I like the look of that Luxman. I saw one in a second-hand shop once about ten years ago, but they wanted a lot for it.

Speaking of "different" styling efforts by design teams, check out this mid-seventies JVC I just picked up locally for TEN BUCKS! It's a JR-S301 60 wpc.
Works great and soumds pretty good as well.

I have one of the luxman "suckfaces" I am not that impressed with the sound..thought it was lacking definition in the low bass, maybe I have a bad one ..I feel for the money they were asking at the time the tuner also could have been better. That JVC i've been tempted many times to pick one up...but most of the ebay stuff the shipping has been too high and it took it over my spending budget.

Not to hijack this thread, but I have that same receiver! I use it at work. It is well built and has a very nice tuner. I got you beat, though, a friend gave it to me!

Want to trade your Luxman for my JVC?
