I am replacing the wire for the tweeters on an old pair of mg-1's. These are really in great condition but the tweeter wire is corroding and just starting to disinagrate. the mid-woofer wires are perfect with zero corrosion or delamination. What diameter is the wire, I have heard 26 or 31 gauge. Can I use copper wire or does it have to be aluminum? I do have a little of the factory adhesive left, but I have been told contact adhesive will work also. any ideas out there?

The wire Magnepans supplies for the repair is 32g aluminum. Copper wire will have somewhat different mass and resistance than AL wire. It is important to get the resistance of the completed tweeter rewire correct ( 5 ohms according to http://www.integracoustics.com/MUG/MUG/articles/speakers.html)
If you don't get the resistance right it will change the crossover points!
The glue that Magnepan supplies is 3M Fastbond 30NF. You may be able to find it locally; I think Magnepan no longer ships this season due to risk of it freezing.
As far as getting the wires in place to apply the fastbond, you can use 3M 77 to get it tacky, but there is concern that the 77 degrades over time, leading to delam.
In my case I got a cheap 9v 2A power supply which I used to apply to the wires. This electrically aligns the wires over the magnets, keeping them in place while the fastbond is applied. This way you don't need the 77 at all.

Don't you need something to limit the current from the power supply?
No, it worked fine at 2 amps. I left it on for 20 minutes or so while the Fastbond dried. Here is a link to the article where I learned of this method

As I recall the lower voltages don't do anything at all; when you get to a high enough voltage, the wires will snap into place. So start low and keep increasing it.
IIRC for me it was 9 volts...
Thanx I will it a go. I bought my power supply from parts express for $13.00. It was used to run a couple cooling fans for an previous audio rack. I ordered the tweeter rebuild kit from magnapan. should be here in a couple days. I'll let you know how it turns out. How much power can these maggies take, I will be running them with a mac mc2300.
As much as you can dish out. I was running my MG-IIbs with 500 wpc at one point.
High current amps (since they are working into a fairly low impedance load) do best.
