Magnepan SMGa speakers, $200, fair price? The speakers are fully functional and are in decent cosmetic condition (no rips or tears). Stands are included. Looking as a possible buy.

For a pair? I believe that's a really fantastic price, especially including stands. Someone else will weigh in on this soon though, I'm sure.

Thats an extremely reasonable price for a set in great shape. The seller's other set of speakers aren't bad, but the Maggies are the better deal. If you like detailed midrange you could do far worse, and not much better. You can always build up the low and high ends at your convenience.

If this is the guy who also has a pair of Vandersteen 2cs, I cast my vote for the 2cs -- Maggies have some very great virtues, but the Vandersteens have better bass and are easier to place in a wider variety of room sizes. But personal taste is really what matters -- see if you can listen to both, and try to make sure that the Maggies especially are properly placed so you can really see what they can do. Either pair would be an excellent choice, and the prices seem fair or even good to me, so good luck.

I auditioned the Vandersteen 2C's about 12 years ago against a pair of Spica TC 60's. I preferred the Spicas because of their imaging so I bought them. However I find that the Spicas are lacking in low end and in overall dynamic range. They are excellent in imaging and midrange. The Magnepan SMGa is the smallest of the Maggies with a FR of 50 to 18K hz. I've never heard them but I'm wondering if they are significantly better than the Spicas in imaging and mids.
Anyway I emailed the seller to see if they are still available.

150 a good price??

A pair came up in my area for 150, no relation of course, I am looking to buy, is that a good price?? They appear to be in great shape!

I would say yes.

What makes these good, I have heard Maggies before, loved them, but never these.. Also there are a pair of SMGs for $160, would that be a better deal? I really do not know the fair price for these speakers as I am not very versed in them.

I am looking to power them with a Simple PP making about 13wpc, will that be enough? And to my knowledge, don't they like 2ohms? If so, I will need to modify my build to accommodate that as the OPT's I am using only have 16, 8, and 4ohm taps...

I would guess that if the Spicas didn't have enough bass for you, the small Maggies might disappoint you -- as dipoles, placement is crucial to having any sensation of bass, but even ideally located, the panels may not have enough area to offer the sort of convincing solidity in the low end that you may want. My impression is that Maggies also like and need a fair amount to power -- its always difficult to predict whether small amounts of power will do what a specific person wants, so I suggest you actually try them with your amp before deciding. I used a pair of II (I think -- not the biggest, but still big, whatever the model number is) with a Dyna Stereo 70 and was perfectly satisfied, but I also was happy with the same amp and Dahlquist DQ 10s, so its obvious that I am an outlier.

I would say yes.

The seller just took them down and re-listed for 250, I am guessing the 150 was for a single speaker? Is it still worth the money? I kinda feel like they are not worth that much especially since they will almost surely need fixing.. They look great though!
