No affil.

Sounds like a real deal for a fairly straigh-forward repair.

Ad Text: Pair of Magneplanar MMG speakers. PLEASE NOTE: One of these speakers works perfectly, but the other is broken. It doesn't produce any high frequency sounds. I assume that something is wrong with the tweeter. It hasn't suffered any visible physical damage, so it may just be a disconnected wire or something. I haven't had it fixed because I no longer have room for these speakers and can't use them.

I did not mark which speaker was broken when I last hooked them up, and I no longer have any amplifier to test them with. For someone who's willing to figure out which speaker isn't working and have it repaired, this is a great bargain. These speakers cost $500 new. Also note that these are 4 ohm speakers and they require an amplifier that is rated to drive 4 ohms.

I'm on it!

<lick>

Good luck!!!!

Got my pair from a fellow AK'er.
I won't say they are the last pair of speakers I will ever own because I can't pass up a deal but they are most likely the last pair of speakers I will have in my main system. Placement can be a bit finnicky and they are power eaters but once those issues are resolved...... :banana::banana:

I don't believe MMGs have a ribbon tweeter. I believe MMGs tweeter is a "quasi-ribbon" - part of the same panel as the rest.

Depends on your definition of "straight-forward".

Most likely the entire ribbon tweeter needs overhaul by Magneplanar which involved removing the old, shipping it in an ABS tube, then reinstalling on the screen. Most in that condition in my area of the world are given away for free. Just sayin'. I suggested to one friend who received a free pair that it might not be worth the effort . . .

My guess is that the tweeter wire has deteriorated and will need to be replaced. It doesn't have to be shipped back. You can do it yourself. I've replaced several pairs of these tweeters myself an it's pretty simple. You will have to order the tweeter wire from Magnepan. The glue will be included in the kit but I understand that they won't ship it in the Winter. The glue can be be sourced from Grainger. Generally, they send enough tweeter wire to repair several pairs of speakers and the glue is relatively cheap.

The project will be very rewarding, if you've never owned a pair of Magnepans. The MMG's are the smallest and cheapest of all of the Maggies but they sound very much like the more expensive ones and don't overwhelm the room.

Good luck and don't let the possible repair scare you off. There are some great instructions on the Maggie Users Group.
