magnovox channels non equal help troubleshoot

william13

That's not me
My modded Magnovox 8802 is great but the right channel is twice as loud as left. The source is a TT. There is a preamp involved. It is not either of these as I checked them out. I would like help trouble shooting the amp. I do not have an oscilloscope. Thanks

Start by swapping the tubes across channels, if the problem moves replace that tube. If not it's probably somewhere under the deck.

There's a thread here somewhere that talks about replacing the balance control with some 380 I think, resistors. Tom B will know if he chimes in.

I switched back tubes 1 and 2 for 3 and 4 and I switched around front tube and no diff.
I can't take full credit on the mod. I got it with new capacitors but I changed out those 390 resistors and changed the output terminals, fuse, switch etc. The channel is about 30-50% softer but otherwise working.

One other finding. I just took my continuity meter to the underside and I have an unexpected finding. There is continuity between - and + on the right and on the left but I can not see what the issue is. It is not that the + terminals are touching the chassis, they are not.

Ok fixed: there was a short where the 390 resistors went. Now working. Thanks
