Making Mindiscs Important Again??

I have gotten into Minidiscs the last few years. I love the format. It is very tactile and rewarding. The quality of the recordings is remarkable. A digital recording from lossless sources to a higher end unit with ATRAC R in SP mode results in a recording that I can't discern a difference in from the original.

I was always told that if you collect something make that something important. Make it detailed and treat it special and it will be, at least to you! I've been having fun recently doing some recording on MD's then tagging and labeling them. Something about the compactness and the durability of the medium along with the flexibility makes it enjoyable. I guess I'm lost in the 2000's! Oh well ?

Here's a few of my recent recordings...Pretty NEAT Huh? IMG_0007_3.JPG IMG_0008_3.JPG IMG_0005_3.JPG IMG_0002_6.JPG IMG_0003_6.JPG

I love what you are doing. Some great music in there too. Nice collection of players, I often used to pick the players up for a few dollars at thrifts, but you don't see many anymore.

Keep up the good work. :)

Maybe I'll start recording the NY Philharmonic on Mon nights at 8:00 from local OTA FM onto cassette, as I've been meaning to do. Put that Nak to more use, and have fun.

I have a few Minidisc decks here. My big recorder is the Sony MDS-JB930. It's not an ES deck, but I have been told it was built in the ES production. I have a portable recorded too, the MZ-R50 which comes with a battery operated stereo microphone and additional battery pack. I have recorded a couple of concerts with it, but you have to have it sitting on something that does not move, nor transmit vibrations. It's one of those micro-miracle devices made by Sony. I also have a player only, the MZ-E44, another Walkman type of product.

Minidiscs are perfect for recording stuff off of FM. You can also record in mono, which will double the recording time. I run mine thru the digital outputs into my Audio by Van Alstine DAC.

The MD ship has sailed from Casa Wildcat. Three Sony players--two portables (of course, one with a faulty loading mechanism) and one home "deck" (with yep, you guessed it, another faulty loading mechanism, and probably the last Sony I'll ever buy out of many failed disc players). Neat format but it never caught on--I did have some fun with it back in the day. At least it had more legs than the DCC format--that one was practically stillborn.
