It makes me sick. There is a photo of the poor dog in the news story. They printed it in the newspaper and I saw it while I was eating lunch today, I nearly cried. Don't click the link if you don't want to see that poor creature.

Man who set dog ablaze gets 23 months to 4 years

UPDATED AT 1:42 P.M.

A 52-year-old Detroit man was sentenced to 23 months to 4 years in prison for setting his dog on fire and leaving her to burn as he walked to a Detroit corner store to purchase beer.

John Delmar Fladger pleaded guilty to animal torture, a felony, and was sentenced this morning before Wayne County Circuit Court Judge David Groner.

...
Baxter said Fladger poured gasoline on the dog and set it on fire Aug. 3 before walking to a liquor store to buy beer. She said the dog, named Lil' Mama, followed him down the street and into the store at the corner of Warren and Bangor, where a store owner expressed concern over the dog.

"He told the store owner that he was trying to kill the dog," Baxter said.

God, save me from ever seeing anything like that happen in front of me. I doubt I'd be able to control myself.

Maybe someone should set him on fire. Like Mike Vic, what the hell was he thinking. Only sick people would hurt an animal like that.

He got animal torture? Well at least it's no worse than killing cows n chickens then eating it too. :sigh: course they're not tortured first, maybe.

I take your point, but that's a bit rough. I can appreciate your sentiments.

Perhaps it is wrong for me to draw a distinction between the animals we raise to eat - and under conditions I am fully aware of and choose to go on eating meat; and pets such as dogs and cats. For whatever reason, it hits me harder when it is a pet. Forgive my hypocrisy, but this is how I feel, right or wrong.

The man is almost certainly insane, and should be institutionalized.

That said, it wouldn't have kept me from clubbing him over the head with his six-pack were I the store owner.

Hey I eat meat too, and have pets also. Give up Prime Rib? I just tend to look at all the angles, especially when the court system hammers down hypocrisy-like sentences?

No, Jeff. It's much worse. It's gratuitous torture and killing vs. slaughter for food. The difference is the suffering of the animal. In fact, one of the conditions for meat to be kosher is that the animal is specifically killed in such a way as to cause no pain or as little pain as possible.

I grill my steak after it's dead, not while it's still alive.

I doubt this man planned on eating his dog.

Shame on him. I'd love to teach that dog how to use a lighter for an evening.

Sorry, that's pretty harsh.

Very sad story. I can't click the link, but I do hope that dog will heal.

With regards kosher (and similarly halal): "A professional slaughterer, using a large razor-sharp knife with absolutely no irregularities, nicks or dents, makes a single cut across the throat to a precise depth, severing both carotid arteries, both jugular veins, both vagus nerves, the trachea and the esophagus, no higher than the epiglottis and no lower than where cilia begin inside the trachea, causing the animal to bleed to death. Any variation from this exact procedure could cause unnecessary suffering; therefore, if the knife catches even for a split second or is found afterward to have developed any irregularities, or the depth of cut is too deep or shallow, the carcass is not..." Which is not exactly 'no pain'. In fact, the draining of the blood during the death is one of the important things (remember, these were developed to ensure safe practices to avoid disease).

But, anyone who tortures an animal (or a person) should not be allowed back on the streets :puke:!

The story said the dog had to be euthanized because it was so badly burned. That piece of human garbage only got 22 months. He should be boiled in oil. Let him see how it feels. :gigglemad:bash::twak::whip:

I think you all know me well enough from around here to know I agree this guy is sick, and should be punished to the fullest extent... A person that does these kinds of things either has mental issues, or never learned to conform to society's rules or acceptance...

But I have to ask this, because every time I see a discussion like this it actually pains me even worse...

Yes, the man tortured an animal and caused it great pain and suffering... and yes, If I saw it, it would do something to stop the guy. I would have the right to detain him, but would it give me the right to be his judge and executioner too, even if I saw him commit the crime? NO... I have no right to beat the man, or dip him in oil, or what ever else... Because our society as a whole says that is unacceptable and we must follow the law...

SO.. that being said, the people that say they would cause great harm or pain to this person for his crime, or actually no better than him, because they are willing to break the laws and the rules of society just as this man has...

Now if laws and rules were different, then yes, I'd be right there with my own sticks.. but as reality and laws are now, I would be no better than him....

He'd served 22 years already-and likely as not has a rap sheet as long as my arm-He's just bad-outta-the box. He's SERIOUSLY defective. He can't be fixed. He just needs to be taking his Eternal Dirt Nap, the sooner, the better.

Ya'll know me well enough to know how I feel about the dog in this situation...

Detroit has one of the best ASPCA/Animal Rescues in the country. Animals are surrendered there every day, and the vast majority of them are eventually adopted to loving homes. Those that cannot be adopted (for reasons of health or temperament) are humanely euthanized. The only reason for this kind of torture is a sick need on the part of the torturer to inflict pain and suffering on the animal.

Having said that: There is something majorly broken in this man. If his conduct towards this animal is any indication, he is capable of far worse than torturing a dog. I certainly don't know him or his background, but animal torture is considered by law-enforcement to be one of the warning signs of psychopathic behavior, and is often a precursor activity in people who later become serial killers or mass murderers.

As awful as his treatment of this animal is, he may well be on the path to far more... That's truly frightening.
