Marantz 2230 vs 2245

I am interested in getting a vintage receiver. I am mainly going to use it to listen to records. What is the main difference between these two receivers. The receiver will be used to power a pair of Bowers&Wilkins 683 series 2 floorstanders. I do not listen to my music at ear spliting levels.

Both the 2230 and 2245 are good units. Though you are using for Lps, I will mention the FM section is heavier on the 2245 and more sensitive to weak stations,

While the lower powered Marantz receiver aren’t bad, I would get the 2245. I recently got 2220 to try out a small receiver. It’s now my bench amp. Using it to test repair turntables. Sounds ok. Had a 2245 and a 2270 on the bench. To me the sound is much richer with the bigger 2245 and 2270. The larger Marantz are much heavier than the 2230. The 2245 is very similar to the 2270 inside.

One closing note, if you get 2230, you may want to upgrade. Less chance to do that if you choose the 2245. I don’t run any of my Marantz receivers loud either. To me the bigger one sounds better. Hope this helps. Questions PM

I bought a 2230 new in 1972. It was great, but I wanted more power. When it got stolen after less than a year, I got a 2245. Not only is the 2245 more powerful by 50%, it is a direct coupled design vs. cap coupled design in the 2230. All of the more powerful Marantz Receivers are direct coupled. I have a lot of Marantz Receivers, but the 2245 is near the top of the list for me. It’s simple, sounds great, has plenty of power, and relatively affordable. You couldn't go wrong with either, but the 2245 would be my choice.

2245. I have had lots of 2230's through here, lovely units in their own right especially with efficient speakers.

With your B&W speakers you will want more power the 2245 can provide. Or a 2325.... :naughty:
