Marantz 2235 Restoration

I just picked up a 2235 from the orig. owner (well, his grandaughter in law), I believe, and it's filthy. But I'm cleaning it up and trying to decide if the wood cab is worth repairing (very rough). Mine is nowhere near as clean as this one, but I hope to bring it back with the help of my vintage repair tech. Will not be cheap, but I knew that going in. I'm not good at electronics. At all. I got the unit for $320 + $80 shipping, it powers up and makes sounds, just needs some tlc. I consider that a bargain- what do the experts here think? The pic is from the sale listing, it's now in the middle of getting 40 years of smoke off. This is a passion project, in memory of my Dad, a big Marantz fan back in the day. Any suggestions anyone has will be appreciated.

Faceplate and knobs look like they will clean up nice. That is some serious nicotine staining, though. At todays inflated prices, that sounds like a pretty good deal to me, if it works.

$400 is a pretty good deal by today's prices, well done! I also think that will clean up really well.

A tip I got from Catrafter for cleaning really bad face plates, is Meguiar's 105, and microfiber rags:
https://www.amazon.com/Meguiars-Mirror-Glaze-Ultra-Cut-Compound/dp/B001O7PNW8

Be extra careful around the lettering with the Meguiar's, if you scrub too hard on the lettering, it can come off.

For your case, it looks like someone sanded off the original finish. It's hard to get the original color and finish back, but if you're not trying to match any other Marantz wood cases, like a tape deck, or TT, you can re-finish it to how you'd like it to look.
