gents,

I have a chance to pick one of these up from a private owner....is it a recommended buy? I know it's not high wattage but am wondering about the sound quality/tuner quality etc...

The small 22XX receivers are nice little receivers! I have a 2230b and it is a great little receiver!

You will like your 2238b!

Get it! A 2238B will surprise you with its power. My 2235B is good for 47WPC. The tuner sections are well regarded, mine pulls in stations from 150 miles. Easy to service, all the parts can still be obtained. And the 2238B is a great looker too, especially with the wood case.

I've been listening to my 2215B a lot lately, and it's tiny footprint and it's seemingly much larger sound, are quite enjoyable. I also have a 2220B that is quite nice.
Though I've never heard a 2238B I think it should maintain the family similarities/resemblance. Which is very nice, indeed.

I gave my 2238B away. I miss it, but I know it is getting more use now and is truly enjoyed regularly.

I have a 2238B and like it very much!

Get some high-efficiency speakers and they will do everything you need.

Regards, Ron

thanks guys...I'm going to look at it at lunch...supposedly it was owned by someone who just went into the nursing home. I'm starting to get excited already.

so I blew the dust out of this thing, de-oxed it and fired it up....WOW...is all I can say.. What an incredible sound this guy puts out. It really sounds fantastic to me. I've been running a big technics and a yamaha and the tuner is not quite as strong but what a fantastic lucious full sound. The best word I can come up with to describe this is musical, it just sounds musical. Maybe some of the measurables that the engineers were shooting for back in that day came to the forefront and some of them forgot that in the end it's just supposed to sound good, this receiver sounds REALLY good...I'm extremely impressed...all the lights work...everything works...and this is from 1978.

what is a good solution to clean the faceplate with?

The manuals say a liquid solution of mild detergent and water applied with a soft cloth or cotton-tipped swab. Never use scouring powder or any abrasive cleaner.

Agreeing with GoMizzou1954, I would also avoid ammonia cleaners. There's a Pledge Multi-Surface cleaner that should be a good option. My own Marantz has gotten a few cleanings over the years with a similar Pledge product.

If there is a deep scratch or gouge in the aluminum faceplate, can it be "sanded" with some fine sandpaper to restore the brushed aluminum look, or is that an anodized coating that can't be fixed once it's ripped?

All Marantz receivers (or at least the ones I've seen and heard) have an anodized coating on the face that can't be fixed.

Just leave the scratches alone is all I say.

This is very true. Some equipment has great specs and just doesn't sound good. Other gear has mediocre specs but a very musical sound.

Enjoy that 2238B Nice unit.

it really sounds alive, this might become my main guy....and it brings FM to life...all sources just sound wicked good through this, but the tuner sounds stupendous.

Congrats. You did wicked good!
I got the nostalgia bug a few years ago with vintage tuners. That led to vintage receivers. Favoring the deep blue dial, I went after the 2270 first but soon added a nice 2252b, close brother to yours, and was mesmerized by its tourquoise display. Very happy with its sound.
Enjoy yours.

so the marantz is dropping a channel out of the blue...anybody have a clue what may be causing this? assuming all deoxing is complete.

what would be the next step?
