Marantz 2385 HELLLLP

Hey y'all! Complete newbie and lurker here in need of brain power! I recently inherited a 2385 (US version) and have little knowledge of how to properly use it. It's currently hooked to my Rega RP1 and Marantz 5010B tape deck. It has been professionally cleaned and is connected to some restored Polk SL-70 speakers. I noticed here and there you can hear a slight hiss in phono 1, but not 2...Is that normalish?

All in all I need a crash course in ideal settings for basic vinyl/tape play. Super dumbed down explanations are verrrrry welcomed... Example: "It needs to be on Stereo for vinyl not L+R"
:) :)

No not normal, probably needs the phono stage rebuilt. The phono stage unlike other stages is HIGH gain so if you have an issue you'll hear it before other stages.

Appears the owners manual is not easy to find. At least in the usual places.

That would show you how to hook everything up correctly but it really is not that hard to do.

Have any pictures of that beast. :D

does it still hiss with turntable into phono 2 ?
set it to stereo ...L+R will make it mono .
there is only 1 phono amp so far as i can see so it wont be that .

I reread it- not in phono 2- essentially it's the same amp. Could also be dirty rca jacks in addition to switches or a colder solder joint somewhere between jack and board.

I count one TT.

Are you saying there is a hiss on one phono when a TT is connected to the channel?

Many people freak when they hear junk on a phono channel when nothing is connected to that channel.
That will happen. The open connection allows stray RF to be picked up by the phone amp.
That is why there are plugs used to short the connection when not connected to TT so it doesn't happen.

One channel noisy when connected but the other OK when connected indicates the phono amp is OK.
