Marantz 4240, no stereo...

I just bought a marantz 4240 knowing that there is a problem with it. I mainly bought it for the wood case that I want for my 2270. I was planning on just selling the 4240 for parts, but now that I have it,and me being me,I want to try and get it running and maybe hand it down to my Brother. Its in a really nice physical cosmetic condition. It powers on but it only works in mono mode.
I tried flipping over to 2ch mode and my speakers made a loud pop.Scared the crap out of me.Switched it back really quick.
Would anyone know what could be leading to this??? I know it could be a number of things, but i was just wondering if there is anything I could look for.
I have opened it up and there seems to be no burnt out components inside.
And all the fuses are good.Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

First off, "WELCOME TO AK!" :D

Secondly, your Marantz model receiver is a Quad receiver, correct?

If you plan on working on it (servicing, etc.) and keeping it in the family, so to speak, for starters, I strongly suggest that you download (free, just sign up) the Owners Manual & Service Manual from here:

http://www.hifiengine.com/library/marantz/4240.shtml

For starters, never :nono: under any circumstances, start switching, setting volume level high, etc. with the receiver turned on. You could probably do more damage to internal components by doing so. Turn unit off clean inside, get some contact cleaner, DEOXIT (there are various forms of Deoxit for different applications, so just buy what you need, cleaning, lubricating, etc.) and clean all switches, level knobs, etc. Once that is done then continue on by setting the receiver in accordance to what the Owners Manual instructs for your desired listening pleasure. Once you download the manuals, in the Owners Manual, specifically, read the section where it say's "CONNECTING THE 4240" and follow accordingly. It appears that it just maybe that a switch in the rear (POWER MODE) needs to be set in it's correct place? Continue to read any and all sections of the Owners Manual to make sure you have everything set up first before turning and testing the receiver.

Continue to follow any and all instructions on setting up the receiver for what it is specifically that you want it to put out. Either Quad Sound or Stereo?

Also check the Service Manual as well for 'trouble-shooting' advice, instructions, etc.?

These are just my recommendations and basic opinion on getting started to give you some sort of indication or direction on what you might be facing, possible repairs, etc. or just a good cleaning is all it could need/use to get it working correctly?

Good luck! :D

Thanks for the reply R-2-R.
I have everything hooked up correctly and cleaned all the pots and sliders.
The thing im noticing when I power on the unit I can still hear some faint audio when the volume is all the way down in mono mode. And still no audio when selected to 2ch mode.Im not planning on using this receiver in quad mode.Just stereo.

Did you download the Owners & Service manuals and read those sections pertaining to setting up the receiver for 2 CHANNEL-FM STEREO? :scratch2:

If you have and still nothing then you are looking at possibly a problem at component level?

I assume that you switch using the front panel "MODE" switch. I also assume that in MONO mode you gave clean sound from all channels? Have you tried it only with internal tuner, or have you connected an external source? If not, try it with a CDP or something, it could be only a tuner failure. Stereo decoders in Marantz tuners often go if someone uses a wrong stereo indicator bulb.

Few more thing about 4240 based on my experience with mine:

Firstly, NEVER TOUCH THE "POWER SELECTOR" SWITCH ON THE REAR PANEL WHEN THE UNIT IS ON! This setting should be changed only when the unit is off and has been off for a few minutes. Otherwise you risk blowing outputs.

What are the positions of the "POWER SELECTOR" switch and the "REMOTE CONTROL" switch? Normal positions for these are "17Wx4" (safer even if you are going to use it in stereo only) and "LOCAL".

These switches are known to cause problems and need cleaning just like front switches and controls.

Another common problem for 4240 are pre out/main in jacks. Connect them (pre out to main in for each channel) with IC cables just in case.

Faint FM sound with volume all the way down is common for this model.

Lastly, if you have a set of headphones, better to use them for testing than speakers. You are less likely to damage anything. Put headphones near your ears, not on ears when testing.

Cheers,

Raf

Thanks rlisin.
I have the power mode switch set to 40wX2, because im only planning on running this with 2 speakers. And the remote control switch is set to local.I just hooked up a CDP and same thing....nothing in 2ch mode.Where are the pre out/main in jacks that you mentioned???? I know my 2270 has jumpers going between pre and main on the back but the 4240 doesn't have this.I usually hear a bit of a pop when I switch from mono to 2ch mode. Using headphones now too. This thing sounds really nice! Just hope I can get her going in stereo mode.
Thanks again.
I'll keep going at it....

Turn it off, wait few minutes, switch to 17Wx4, front mode to "DISCRETE", turn on and see what happens.

My 4240 has pre out/main in jacks to the right of the input jacks. The rear panel of mine looks like this:

Maybe not all versions had those. If yours doesn't, good thing is there would be no problem there, bad thing that there's no easy way to test outputs one by one.

Thanks again rlisin.
Did what you said and nothing. Also tried the 17wX4 in mono mode and nothing, just faint static. And also tried it with a CD and it plays VERY faintly.Yes mine doesn't have the pre/main jacks on the back......

Try to connect the CDP to CD-4/AUX rear inputs and headphones to REAR slot (17wX4, DISCRETE). Also, make sure that MONITOR switch is in 'Source' position, DOLBY selector is in 'Off' position.

If you have clean sound in mono from all channels, this at least suggests that power amp section is OK and the problem is somewhere in the preamp section. But it could be anything from bad switches and solder joints to dead transistors.

Well, it would be tech time if it were me. But maybe try asking in the Marantz forum (there's one here on AK: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=134), maybe someone had a similar problem. Make sure to write what you've already done and tried to avoid people repeating the same suggestions.

I too made the mistake of switching the black switch on the back with the unit on. Mine is a 4270, and I thought I had switched it off, but I actually hit the button to turn on the B speakers by mistake.
I'm told this commonly causes big issues and could have blown the output transistors. I'm still saving to have the damn thing fixed. It's a great unit.

Sorry to hear this. A poor design on Marantz's part. It should have been fuse protected.
