Marantz CD-52

I’am fitting new sled gears to a couple of Marantz CD players and wondering what is the purpose of the white piece on top of the lid. Looks like a bump stop but don’t see what it bump into. On one player this has turned into a runny sticky goo……..is it necessary to replace and if so would plain rubber bump stop do?

Think it's just a weight to help hold down the clamp possibly a tweek someone has added. That clamp mech looks very similar to Philips cdm4/19 which has no such bump but benefits from adding mass. Normally there are springs either side of the black pivot that apply the pressure. There is usually a tiny ball bearing underneath that benefits from lubrication and eliminating any divots it may have drilled in the surfaces. If dismantling it is easy to loose the ball bearing. Check it's not an early magnetic clamper.

Need to look more.

Are you saying you have more that one player with this white lump?

In that pic the lump looks slightly off center so may have been added like John suggested.

Very simular clamp, not sure what model they have modded here maybe CD-65 (old pic on my drive), but no lump.

You mean like on my CD-52 MK2 SE? It's bizarre, right? I honestly thought someone had lost a part and added some sort of "Blu Tack". You can clearly see the rim of the rubber button, though. It is OEM. It would be nice to find a replacement part!
