Marantz HD 77 - 50.00 ?

I really need help.....with info.....on these HD 77's. I really dont need them, but, they sit in this store for 50.00. The cabinets look above average, or, real good shape. They have only one of the original tweeter in each cab, the other tweeters are unknown, with mesh grill covers. The mid-ranges, I cant really tell if they are original, as in the woofers (which need re-foaming surrounds), and the woofers have wire mesh grill covers. The speaker grill covers are generic, but , work and look real nice. The vari-plug is present, but not sure if rigged, or original.

I had the 770's in the service, and lost them due to "being broke", and have always wanted another set. I wonder if these are as good as the 770's.

What you all say??????.....for $50.00.......no:no: or yes:yes:.....leave them alone...or.....bring them home????:scratch2:

The store says that a 24hr try period is offered, and if not like, can bring them back.

this afternoon, July 7th, will be posting the photos, be sure to check back then.......

WHAT THE HECK=====I went ahead and bought them anyways. I got there first thing in the morning, asked about the 24hr trail period, he said "well, I can 't do that, but, I will let you have them for 39.99". Wow, okay, for both? """NO"" each. Well, then I laid in my best reduce price story, and then got them for 45.oo (both).

I figured that the cabinets are worth that much, cause they look to still have some new shine to them, only one bottom had really any scrapes or damage. Plus, how often do you ever see these for sale. Plenty of HD770's, but, not these.

???? can the 770's tweeters work with these as a replacement?????????:scratch2:

Hmmmmm...hard choice. Too bad you didn't snap some pics of them. I'm not sure how often replacement drivers show up for those on eBay but you might check and see. Depends on how much you're willing to sink into them.

Was this worth 45.00 plus tax?

Well, I think so. I would really like to refurbish these to original (except maybe the grill covers).

My new project begins. I will start by extracting the mesh grill cover over the woofers and hoping that they are original. They do need re-foaming(surrounds).

Then, of course, to find out how many other drivers are original.

I am hoping that for starters, the woofers, mid-range, and at least the tweeters are original. I know that the super tweeters are not there. And, I really think that one of the tweeters are not the same, looks the same, but, I dont think it was one of the same set.

This thread will continue in the marantz section, with the progress of above said work.

Hey Wolf! How in the heck did I miss this thread? lol! Well, anyways, 2 years later and you still have the 77's, that's super. They are fantastic speakers with the right settings, tuning, & placement. Yours, to say the least and as kind as possible, are "hacked". Yes, the mids are original, as are your vari-Q plugs, amazingly. surprisingly though, given the fact that the vari-q's survived, yet the original foam grills did not, and as I squint looking at your pics, the dust caps look suspect on the woofers. They appear larger than originals, however, that's not to say someone replaced the caps while refoaming them, that's a given, but I would be curious to see woofer backside and numbers on it. I have all the literature you need to get them in order, and back to original, if that is your mission. The driver arrangement is wrong in yours with the tweeters. The large dome tweeter belongs in the top left hole, while the super tweeter goes in the top center. Yes, the later 770/880 tweeters will work in the 77/88's. I have personally compared the 77/770 as I have both. They are so close sonically, that only the very critical ear can distinguish the differences. I would have to give the nod to the 77's because they are a little more revealing with imaging and soundstage delivery, but nevertheless, I like them both. Really all in all, they both compliment one another because where one shines, the other falls off slightly, and vice versa. A sort of "trade-off", if you will. 77's sacrifice a little efficiency for SQ, where 770's sacrifice a little SQ for better efficiency. Bass and midrange from both is equal in every respect, flatness, beat, brass, wind, & vocals all come through with very natural output with very little roll off, saturation or coloration.

Here's a pic of one of my HD77's

Mine are all original survivors, right down to the woofer surrounds and sculpted open cell foam grills. Feel free to contact me with any info you might need. :thmbsp:
