I just received a pair of marantz imperial 7 speakers,from a friend.Are these good speakers? Restoration will be needed,as the midrange surround needs replacing,and some new foam covers will also be needed.The cloth surrounds on the 12" woofers appear to be intact,but a bit dirty.I have pics,but not too sure how to upload,so if someone wants to send me an email to richd860@hotmail.com I will be more than happy to send the pics to you.One final question: Are these speakers rare??? thanks. I still have a pair in mint condition appearance wise that have been in my family since new. I got rid of the rotting foam grill, and covered the backing board with nice black speaker cloth- a huge improvement! My mid driver also has rotting foam, but the other ones look fine. I think an upgrade for the mids and a recap job on the x-over, such as it is, would yield great results. If nothing else, they look nice....(and oh,, what BASS!!)
 
I would rate them as worth a refoam provided you can buy the foams only somewhere and not get caught buying two 'kits' at $25 apiece .... the speakers are not valuable but will sound nice once redone. I have the Imperial 8 (not as scare as the Imp 9 but more so than the Imp 7) and while they are kinda neat to won, they don't have much value .... but actual value questions have to go to $$ and Cents so I won't pass any numbers here ....
 
There is some very interesting technical information available online about the Marantz Imperial speakers. The 7 is something of the "red-headed stepchild" of the family, being designed more by the marketing department to take on the JBL L-100 than by the engineering department who was more interested in flat frequency response.

Yep, my buddy's bought them back in the 1970s. Poor man's JBL L100s as they were half the size and most of the rock sound we were looking for.
