Marantz SR 4000 problems

Hi everyone,

I own an old (circa-1980) Marantz SR 4000 stereo receiver that I picked up second-hand a few years ago for practically nothing. Aside from the dial not lighting up, it worked like a charm from the day I got it until recently.

Unfortunately, it quit working on me a short while ago. The switched AC outlet in the back works and a "click" sound is audible three or four seconds after turning the power on, but otherwise the unit just seems dead. Nothing comes out of the speakers; none of the lights or needles move. Furthermore, the fuse remained intact, and replacing it had no effect at rectifying the problem.

I know that the SR 4000 came out roughly around the time Marantz was acquired by Philips, and I get the impression that it's not exactly trouble-free either. That said, would anyone happen to have a suggestion for how I might go about identifying the problem and fixing it?

Your receiver is more complex than 'Solid State' gear. It uses ICs rather than discrete components. As a result, you'll need the service manual to see what the waveforms should look like and an oscilloscope to 'see' the actual WF your amp is producing.
Hope this helps.

Uh-oh...

I did take a peek inside the cabinet, and nothing looked obviously wrong. Not that that gets me anywhere...

I'm no expert at working with proprietary electronics components. If it's too complicated or expensive to realistically fix, I might take the opportunity to look for other equipment and pass the Marantz off as a lost cause. At least I don't have anything to lose. :D

Did you get the Marantz SR-4000 fixed

Would you sell the wood case? I have a SR-4000 with a damaged case.
