i own a pm-74d, when i turn the volume up too loud, or the bass hits too hard, the receiver turns off, then clicks back on.
i'm driving a pair of yamaha ns-5's and the don't get very loud before the marantz starts to turn off and on. know why?

i am an audio-newbie, sorry if this problem is due to idiocy.

Sounds like the relay activating due to too much DC offset voltage. First, get a copy of the service manual for your unit, if you are technically inclined to do it yourself. Second, check Echowar's excellent "DC Offset and you!" sticky in the Vintage Solid State forum. Do not attempt to do what is said in that sticky without a service manual. I have an older Marantz unit, and what needs to be done is clearly outlined in the service manual.

The service manual might be in the Marantz manuals database, stickied in the Marantz forum. That's a nice unit, well worth recalibrating!

And welcome to AK! :thmbsp:

Just a point! It could also be your speakers. I have a Sansui AU-G77XII that will click off and back on with a pair of pioneer 10 inch speakers, only at volume 4 or 5. If I use my KLH towers, I can damn near turn the volume up to 8 or 9 with out any issues. So, speaker efficiency and ratings are at play here.

It may be that there is nothing wrong with your amplifier. Try a different set of speakers. Now, if it were playing loud with no issues for months or years, and then started acting up recently, then go to the service manual and adjust your DC and BIAS.
