Marantz TT42P any good?

I couldn't find much of a review on the Marantz TT42P, the "review" on audioholics was pathetic!

I realized today how terrible my Audio-Technia LP60 is, at least using it at line-level with its onboard preamp. So I'm looking to get rid of it and upgrade. The TT42P can be had for $350 new, so lets call that my budget.

I have a marantz nr1403 avr and a 5220 cassette in my stack, so this unit is aesthetically attractive to me. And it has a preamp, so it is a one shot deal. These are my reasons for exploring the option. Anyone heard the TT42P? Impressive sound for its price?

Otherwise I'm thinking of just buying a phono preamp to use with the AT-LP60 until I find a good deal on a Thorens or Rega TT. I think I've narrowed that down to Rega Fono Mini A2D VS. Bellari VP130. Leaning towards the Rega. Thoughts?

Thanks for reading!

I'm not so familiar with the term/brand "Dual". I'm mainly wondering if anyone who has heard TT's from all across the scale, and heard this one, can give me an impression of it's sound.

I'm coming from BOTL and never heard a decent TT, so even a better needle on my existing will sound better to me. Also, I mentioned a $350 budget.

Thanks.

From your system it's straddling 2ch and video. If you really want to do analog/2ch right your either going to need a separate phono preamp to go with your present Marantz AVR or purchase a 2ch analog receiver or seperates. I havn't listened to a TT42P but at that price point it will probably fall within the relm of the other NEW entry level belt drive turntables being better than what you have now but nothing to write home about. IMO you could do a lot better with a preowned/vintage turntable both performance and value wise with a $350 budget which could possibly include a preowned 2ch receiver that wont require purchasing a phono preamp. Plenty of good deals/equipment on AKs Barter Town or your local Craigs List.

An Elac Miracord 50H has popped up on CL for real cheap, can't seem to find any negative thoughts on them. Would that and a phono preamp be worth the effort? It is always 4 hour round trip for me whenever I get anything on my local CL, I live out of the ways. TT is apparently in good working order.

What cart is on the Elac? Can they be set up for modern carts?

Check the idler for flat spots or brittleness.

No clue on cartridge, no info on ad, only reason I know its a 50H is I barely made the letters from the photo in the ad. If they call me back I'll try to get some answers.

Edit: Just found AK thread on upgrading cart for the 50H, so yes on that.

I'm also curious about old tube amped stereo consoles and using them as a preamp and turntable and also as a table to set all my other gear on. These seem to be readily available and always cheap maybe because they're such monstrosities, like free pianos. Perhaps it is rare these would have main in/pre out though?

Just a thought, but it seems that U-Turn could be shipping their new table soon, could be a great option.

Could get it with the acrylic platter and still be under budget.

As long as it comes in a different color :lmao:

And that still leaves me needing to find a phono stage. Inevitable I know.
Is this REALLY an "Audiophile" preamp? http://www.amazon.com/TC-750LC-BLAC...73898&sr=8-2&keywords=tcc+tc-750+phono+preamp

I guess asking about phono preamps will be quite subjective, wish there was an easy way to demo 'em. Ha, then again everything involving sound is subjective to a certain extent.

I have a lot of beat up records so I'm for the warm forgiving side of things.

You could just grab one of those Artdj ones for cheap for the time being, for a budget stage folk seem to think highly of them, and upgrade it later if inclined.

Hah...yeah, the green doesn't get me going either :)

Thanks, hadn't heard of that one but it does look to have rave reviews. Can't say I care for the LED lights but hey, that is easily "fixed", and for the price looks like it is hard to beat. That and the Elec 50H and I might be sitting much prettier than where I am now, for just under $100. Only $30 after I sell my AT-LP60.
