Marantz versus Pioneer

I have a Marantz 2275 and a Pioneer SX-828. I prefer the sound of the Marantz over the Pioneer. I am looking for a higher powered receiver. Either a Marantz 2325 or a Pioneer 1250/1280. I'm wondering if just because I prefer the sound of the 2275 will I automatically prefer the sound of the 2325 over the 1250/1280? Do the bigger receivers mirror the smaller receivers in tone characteristics?
Another idea I was throwing around was to pick up a higher powered amp and just use the 2275 as a preamp. Will I maintain the tone characteristics of the 2275 this way?

Just what I noticecd in my gear and in no way "official" but from 2275 to 2325 and sx-650/750/990/939/636/535/424/etc... to SPEC1/SPEC2 I notice that the sound gets a bit cleaner/clearer/stronger.

In a way, I prefer the smaller stuff, but that may be just speaker synergy. I need to try the bigger power on the less efficient speakers/more demanding speakers.

Most of my listening is not using most of the power of any of these pieces. But when I need/want it, it sure is great to have!

Yeah for the most part I like my Marantz 2275 at between 10 and 11 oclock and its actually very very loud there. But once in a while I like it about 12 noon (with 4 speakers) and its ear splitting but I can see the ligts flicker just a bit at that volume. So I figure I'm clipping. Although it isn't clipping audibly noticaeble yet.
 
Good questions.I have a sx-1280 but no Marantz to compare it to.All I can tell you is the PIO. sounds great and will power anything.
