You might be right... it is build well but not as good as the 6100 or 6300. But if I ever find one again for cheap I will buy it again. Not Micro-Seiki built. CEC/Chuo Denki built.
What about the 6350? I have one and it sounds pretty good, but not quite as popular as the 6300. I wanted to go through it and clean it up and get it going real good, is it worth it?

If you find a Marantz in working or near-working shape, buy it. The things go for a big premium on eBay so if you don't like it you can flip it easily.
I too have a PL 518, I bought at a garage sale this summer. Bought replacement feet and shined the dust cover up. This is a very nice sounding TT
It is a heavy sucker too! I have found all of them have feet that have disintegrated. I bought the rubber with sorbothane tipped feet and they seem to be fine. I had a Sansui 881 that the guy with the turntable wanted to trade for. He traded the TT plus gave me $40 for the Sansui.......a decent trade.
