Marantz vs Pioneer

Im just curious as to what the main difference is between these brands from the 70s. Comparing say the 2325 to the sx1050. Basically the Pioneer SXs to the marrantz 22xx and 23xx. I've never heard a marantz and have been around Pioneer and McIntosh (used together) all my life as far as vintage stuff goes. What would strike me first about a Marantz receiver? I might just have to get one to hear for myself, but what do you think? thanks

I've never been lucky enough to hear a Marantz receiver. The one tuner (a 104) I'd heard blew as far as selectivity and sensitivity were concerned, but the sound was okay. My Marantz CD player (CD-46) was immediately different sound-wise compared to the Sony it replaced: less treble but WAY more smoothness and detail. I just retired a Pioneer receiver (SX-450) and replaced it with a Yamaha tuner/Kenwood integrated setup, and wonder why I kept the Pioneer for so long!

Whether MY limited experience with Marantz and Pioneer equipment is any help or not, I don't know. Let's hope so.

Do yourself a favor and just go out and get one. I guarentee you, you will not be disappointed.

10-4 on that, I picked up a 2230B this weekend at a yard sale. Sounds great! however, the panel did not light up. Upon investigation I found the fuse lamps had been replaced with regular fuses......... Apparently no harm was done as the fuse had protected the ckt by taking itself out.

I have both brands, 2325, 2285B, SX-1250. I had a SX-1050 briefly, until I parted it out. Both brands give quality sound, but in my opinion, I don't really hear a difference in the quality. The tuner is great in the SX-1250, I might give it an edge over the 2325 for FM. In terms of pricing, the Pioneer has, in the past, lagged behind the Marantz in prices. But I see a increase in Pioneer pricing, such as in the SX-1250, SX-1050. The SX-980 is still a bargain, compared to Marantz 2285B prices.
