matching tuner for lafayette KT-550

The lafayette kt-550 is quite the amp. I believe that the KT-600 was the preamp built for the 550. Was the tuner, the KT-500 the rest of the matched set? And if so, is it up to the level of the amp and preamp? Is this the lafayette equivalent of the Citation I, II and III? Thanks Norm

Yes a set, the KT-550 was reputedly designed by none other than the HK Citation gear designer Stu Hegeman.
 
The model 700 is the matching tuner. The amp was designed by Hegeman. It's pretty much my favorite amp, out of all that I have.

The correct matching tuner to the Lafayette KT-550/KT-600 combo is either the KT-500A (AM/FM), the KT-650 (FM only) or the LT-700 (FM Stereo Multiplex, only available in factory wired version). If well built and maintained (re-aligned) these are good tuners but not on a par with a HK Citation III(X). Not sure if the Lafayette tuners were actually designed by Stu Hegeman. (The KT-550/600 were). Later model Lafayette tuners were not U.S made but rebadged cheap Japanese junk.
Please note that all these tuners (except the LT-700) were monophonic and you'll need an external multiplex adaptor to receive stereo FM broadcasts. (a Lafayette KT-220 would be the right companion). Not the best tuners in the world but nice to have if you're the (lucky) owner of a KT-550/KT-600 combo.

I think I also saw that the LT-50 was the factory made version of the KT-500. Is this correct? I am lucky enough to have the KT-550 and KT-600, and even though it doesn't sound as though it is a "great tuner" it would be a cool thing to complete the trio. I do have an eico mx 99, multiplex unit, and like most things I have it needs work, but I could use that with one of the tuners if I had to. Of the three tuners mentioned-the 500, the 650 and the 700, any idea which one sounds the best? Stereo is not a priority. Norm
