Mazda - Car Audio Build

Hello All

This is a slightly different project some do here, but I've recently wrapped up a nice period specific audio setup for a Mazda car I own.

Somehow, I got a major itch for hording Mcintosh car audio and other nice audio parts and decided to do something with them. In a nutshell, the old Boston Acoustics SR50's and Kenwood amps were hurting my ears. Hearing changes over time, and the setup I bought over 10-15 years ago, which would be fine for most people under 30, didn't cut in any longer. Ear fatigue etc.

In conjunction with my McIntosh bug. I have had it in my head for the last 10 years, I MUST HAVE the SPZ50's from Boston Acoustics. I had never heard them live, let alone seen a set locally, but I have never been able to shake the need to own them, the last of the best BA made.

That is why I am here. Beg borrow steal, its happened. And I can't begin to tell you what sonic delight my ears have.

Current Setup

Boston Acoustics SPZ50 speakers - Bought recently, BNIB
McIntosh Mx406 HU with DC/DC converter - have another in the box that got recently repaired, some how decided that I had to own two in case one breaks and have the clarion cd lens transport as well.
McIntosh MPM4000 VU Meters
McIntosh MCC222 for the woofer: This will move over to biamp the tweeters
Mcintosh MC431 - Love this Amp, amazing sound
12" BOSTON ACOUSTICS G312-4 - that will get powered by Mcintosh MC420

Car is completely dynamated, need to do some more sound treatment for frequencies resonance.

I am sitting on another pile of Mcintosh amps for my Audi. I just need to find another pair of SPZ50s for the wagon, then I will move forward there.

Brief on the MX406, Analog input is amazing. Added a Topping D10 that the iphone works from, amazing sound.

The SPZ50's .... I have never hear such midrange from a little speaker till now. I cannot begin to tell the new SQ crowd how much of a missed opportunity they've had not being able to listen to the last of Boston's Best. Granted, speakers are personal, this just my opinion, but they are special speakers, very special.

I've done enough car installs over the years and worked with crossovers, dta's etc. But for a true barebones setup that virtually nothing gets tweaked, the soundstage, smoothness, clarity just blows my mind.

So many thanks to current and past OP's that got me here

Pictures below, still a work in progress. Happy to answer any questions

I've got the same problem, except it's about a dozen Soundstream amps and a pile of audiocontrol EQs and crossovers. Over the course of one summer around 1990 I heard the a/d/s 320i separates many times and have wanted them ever since. Fat chance I'll ever find some now.

It took me about 3 years to finish my 1992 Chevy truck, then it lasted 20 years and 200000 miles with zero failures.

Two years ago I got a new truck, and now my commute is 7 minutes each way. I'll be suffering the mediocre factory stereo for quite a while yet, as bigger priorities loom.

change the factory stereo if you can, 7 minutes commute could be seven minutes in heaven
